Olympique Lyonnais

Olympique Lyonnais, commonly known as Lyon or OL, is a French professional football club based in Lyon, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The club competes in Ligue 1, the top tier of French football, and plays its home matches at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais (Groupama Stadium) in Décines-Charpieu, a suburb of Lyon. The stadium, opened in January 2016, has a capacity of 59,186. Lyon's colors are white, red, and blue, and its motto is Le football est un art (Football is an art).

The club's nickname, Les Gones, means The Kids in the local Franco-Provençal dialect, reflecting Lyon's identity and strong youth development tradition. Lyon has a fierce rivalry with nearby Saint-Étienne, known as Le Derby or the Derby Rhône-Alpes, one of the most intense rivalries in French football. Fan culture is vibrant, with ultra groups like the Bad Gones, founded in 1987, known for passionate support and elaborate tifos at Groupama Stadium.

Lyon's golden era began in the early 2000s under the ownership of Jean-Michel Aulas, who purchased the club in June 1987. The club won its first Ligue 1 title in 2001–02 and proceeded to win a record seven consecutive league championships through 2007–08. Domestically, Lyon has also secured eight Trophées des Champions, five Coupes de France, and three Ligue 2 titles. In Europe, Lyon reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2009–10 and 2019–20, and the Europa League semi-finals in 2016–17. Off the pitch, the club underwent a major ownership transition: American businessman John Textor acquired Lyon in December 2022, but due to financial struggles, Michele Kang was named president in June 2025.[edit]

The roots of Olympique Lyonnais trace back to 1899 through earlier local sides, but the modern club was officially founded in 1950 following a merger between Lyon Olympique Universitaire (founded 1899) and FC Lyon. The club initially played at the Stade de Gerland, which remained its home until 2015. Lyon spent its early decades bouncing between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, winning its first major trophy—the Coupe de France—in 1964, followed by a second in 1967. The club also secured three Ligue 2 titles during this period.

The turning point came in June 1987 when Jean-Michel Aulas purchased the club. Under his leadership, Lyon gradually built a competitive squad and a renowned youth academy. The arrival of players like Juninho Pernambucano, Michael Essien, and goalkeeper Grégory Coupet, combined with the coaching of Paul Le Guen, propelled the club to its first Ligue 1 title in 2001–02. That victory kicked off an unprecedented run of seven consecutive league titles from 2001–02 through 2007–08, a record in French football. During this golden era, Lyon also reached the Champions League quarter-finals three times (2003–04, 2004–05, 2005–06) and the semi-finals in 2009–10.

After the seven-title streak, Lyon experienced a period of transition but remained competitive, winning the Coupe de France in 2012 and 2019. The club returned to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019–20, defeating Manchester City before losing to Bayern Munich. In 2016, Lyon moved to the new Parc Olympique Lyonnais, a state-of-the-art stadium. The 2020s brought financial difficulties and ownership changes: John Textor acquired the club in 2022, but by June 2025, Michele Kang took over as president.
