Sim's most significant honor is collective: the 2009 Mercury Prize, awarded to The xx for their self-titled debut, one of British music's most prestigious awards and a rare win for a debut record built on such restraint. As a founding member, bassist and co-vocalist, he was central to the album that took it. His solo work has earned strong critical reception rather than trophies, with Hideous Bastard singled out for its honesty about addiction, mental health and his HIV status. For many listeners, the more meaningful distinction is his willingness to speak publicly about living with HIV since age 17, a disclosure that shifted the conversation around stigma in music and made him a reference point for openness in the indie world.
