Old Boy

Shinichi Goto wakes up in a windowless hotel room after ten years of captivity, armed only with a television and a cell phone but no memory of why he was imprisoned. He has five days to find his captor or face death, launching him into a violent underworld where he hunts for answers about the crime that erased his past. This dark psychological thriller by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi explores how far a person will go when driven by the need for vengeance.

The series ran in Futabasha's Weekly Manga Action from 1996 to 1998 before being collected into eight tankobon volumes. Dark Horse Comics brought the English translation to North America between 2006 and 2007, introducing Western audiences to its grim atmosphere and shocking narrative twists. While the manga stands on its own, the story gained global recognition through Park Chan-wook's 2003 film adaptation, which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. [edit]
