Ohio Bobcats

Ohio University's athletic program carries the Bobcats banner through the landscape of NCAA Division I competition. Based in Athens, Ohio, this charter member of the Mid-American Conference since 1946 fields teams across sixteen sanctioned sports. The program maintains a strong presence in the conference's East Division, balancing six men's squads with ten women's teams to create a diverse competitive roster.

The football team calls Peden Stadium home, an intimate venue that opened in 1957 and features distinctive blue seating. While the stadium holds about 24,000 fans, the basketball squad plays inside the Convocation Center, and ice hockey takes place at the Ohio University Ice Arena. The football program has secured six MAC championships in 1963, 1967, 1968, 1970, 1985, and 1988. Frank Lauterbur guided the team to three straight titles during the late 1960s before Tim Albin revitalized the program from 2013 to 2022. The 1985 squad stands out as a historic achievement by winning the MAC title and advancing to the FCS national championship game where they fell to Youngstown State.

Recent seasons have tested the roster against power-conference opponents. On September 5, 2026, the team traveled to Lincoln to face Nebraska Cornhuskers. Ohio trailed just 14-13 at halftime but ultimately suffered a 49-21 defeat. Reports highlighted flashes of promise from rookie players despite the loss. Following that road opener, the Bobcats prepared to host Jackson State for their home game.

Rivalries define the fan experience at Peden Stadium. The Battle for the Boot against Miami RedHawks often decides division standings while Kent State Golden Flashes provide another intense matchup.
