About This Album
August 10, 1979 marked the arrival of Off the Wall, Michael Jackson's fifth studio album and his first release under Epic Records. This project signaled a definitive shift as Jackson began working with producer Quincy Jones after their time together on the 1978 film The Wiz. The record blends disco, rhythm and blues, pop, and soft rock across ten tracks that explore themes of romance, hedonism, and freedom. Songwriters like Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, and Rod Temperton joined Jackson in crafting these sounds, while he contributed three original compositions himself.
Critics hailed this collection as a reinvention for the artist, moving him away from his earlier Motown image toward a mature solo identity. Commercial success followed quickly as the album spent over eight months in the Top 10 of the Billboard charts and topped the Hot Black Albums list for sixteen weeks. It became the best-selling album in the United States for 1980 and eventually sold more than 20 million copies globally.
Five singles emerged from the sessions, including two number-one hits: "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You". Jackson made history by becoming the first solo artist to generate four Top 10 singles from a single release. Despite receiving only two Grammy nominations, the album won Favorite Soul/R&B Album at the American Music Awards twice. In 2025, the Recording Industry Association of America certified it diamond, cementing its status as a foundational work in popular music.
