    Formation Story

The three members of Number_i, having spent years together as part of the popular group King & Prince, made the pivotal decision in 2023 to chart a new course. Seeking a fresh start after leaving their previous agency, they joined forces with producer Hideaki Takizawa, who had launched his new agency, TOBE, earlier that year. It was in Tokyo, Japan, on October 15, 2023, that TOBE officially announced the formation of this new unit. Unlike many idol groups that undergo lengthy trainee periods, these artists entered the scene with extensive performance experience already under their belts. Yuta Kishi suggested the group's distinctive name, Number_i, cleverly drawing from multiple profound meanings: the idea of being number one, representing the concept of being the only one, and expressing the Japanese word for love.

Their debut came swiftly on January 1, 2024, with the release of the digital single "GOAT." This assertive track, brimming with confident energy, immediately signaled a fresh start for the trio and set the tone for what fans could expect. While "GOAT" delivered a swaggering hip-hop sound, early releases quickly showcased their desire to explore a broader sonic landscape. Subsequent digital singles, including "BON," "Blow Your Cover," and "INZM," moved into smoother R&B territory, demonstrating their versatility. This blend of bold hip-hop beats with seamless R&B moments became a hallmark of their developing sound, complemented by an emphasis on sharp choreography and strong stage presence in their live shows.

Within a year of their debut, Number_i released their first full album, "No. I," in 2024. This 14-track record marked a significant evolution in their artistry, clearly showcasing their growing creative input. Each member took on producer roles for tracks, collaborating with other artists like Vaundy, a clear departure and progression from their previous work. This commitment to artist-driven creation positioned Number_i as a significant new act under TOBE, representing a notable shift in the Japanese idol scene.

    Musical Style

Number_i blends J-pop foundations with hip-hop and R&B influences. Their debut single GOAT features heavy beats, rap verses, and sharp choreography that highlights their performance skills. Later tracks like ICE shift toward sleek, atmospheric R&B that lets their vocals shine in a different light.

The group stands out for the creative roles each member plays. Yuta Jinguji produced INZM and JELLY while Yuta Kishi handled Like HEAVEN, ICE, and his solo track Recipe. Sho Hirano worked with Vaundy on the alternative-leaning ToumeiNiNaritai. This hands-on approach gives their music a personal touch that feels distinct in the current Japanese scene.

Their debut album No. I moves between high-energy dance tracks and moodier, introspective songs. Solo features allow each member to showcase individual styles while the group numbers keep a consistent performance-driven identity. The overall sound targets both domestic listeners and international streaming audiences looking for fresh J-pop with global appeal.

    Cultural Impact

Number_i arrived at a time of change in the Japanese entertainment industry. As former King & Prince members who moved to an independent agency, they symbolize new possibilities for idols seeking greater creative control. Their quick success has drawn attention to how artists can build careers outside traditional major agency structures.

The trio brings a modern visual style that mixes high-fashion streetwear with polished choreography. Music videos for tracks like GOAT and Numbers use cinematic lighting and dynamic staging that resonate with global pop trends. This approach helps position them as a Japanese act with crossover potential in international markets.

Early in their career they have already sparked conversations about self-production in idol music. Collaborations with established creators like Vaundy on their debut album show their desire to expand artistic boundaries. While still in the early stages, their work encourages fans and fellow artists to value creative input alongside performance excellence.
