Lana Del Rey stepped away from polished pop production to create a grittier, more organic sound on her sixth studio album. Released August 30, 2019, the record features soft rock and psych-rock textures that paint a darker portrait of American life compared to the idealized imagery of painter Norman Rockwell. Jack Antonoff handled most of the production alongside Del Rey, Rick Nowels, and Andrew Watt. The sessions blended vintage instrumentation with modern techniques to create a sonic landscape ranging from reverb-drenched guitar jams to stark piano ballads.

The album opened with "Mariners Apartment Complex" before moving through fourteen tracks that explore love, loss, and the complexities of the California dream. Notable moments include the seven-minute psychedelic epic "Venice Bitch" and the minimalist title track. Critics immediately recognized the shift in tone, with Pitchfork awarding the project a perfect score and naming it the best album of 2019.
