On a gray April morning in 1896, a small fish stall opened its shutters in Bremerhaven, a bustling port town on Germany's North Sea coast. That stall, named Nordsee after the sea it faced, would eventually grow into one of Europe's most recognizable seafood chains. Today, Nordsee GmbH operates more than 300 locations across Germany, Austria, and other European countries, serving everything from the classic Fischbrötchen to smoked salmon platters and shrimp salads. The company no longer runs its own fishing fleet, but it sources from trusted suppliers with an emphasis on quality and sustainability, keeping the original promise of fresh fish, prepared simply and served fast.

Nordsee's menu has evolved well beyond its maritime roots. Alongside traditional offerings, the chain now includes plant-based fish alternatives made by Novish, a move that put it ahead of many competitors in the German quick-service market. The blue and white logo, a nod to the North Sea, remains a familiar sight in shopping centers, train stations, and city centers across Europe.
