Mary J. Blige stepped into 2001 with No More Drama, her fifth studio album released by MCA Records on August 28. Following the success of Mary, this record found her refining a blend of rhythm and blues that balanced heavy beats with raw emotion. The project features fourteen tracks that explore themes of heartbreak, resilience, and moving past toxic relationships. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and topped the R&B Albums chart, shifting nearly 300,000 copies in its first week alone.

The album launched four successful singles, led by "Family Affair," which became Blige's first number-one hit on the Hot 100. Critics praised the production and her vocal delivery, earning nominations for Best R&B Album and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 44th Grammy Awards. She later took home the award for "He Think I Don't Know" at the next ceremony.
