Nichijou
Keiichi Arawi
Overview
Keiichi Arawi's Nichijou transforms the quiet streets of Gunma Prefecture into a playground for surreal chaos. This manga, which began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's Shōnen Ace magazine in December 2006, follows an ensemble cast through their daily routines that frequently spiral into absurdity. The story balances mundane school life with bizarre events involving robot maids and talking cats without relying on a traditional narrative arc. After an initial run spanning ten volumes completed in late 2015, the series returned to publication in 2021 following a six-year break. Kyoto Animation adapted the work into a 26-episode anime series titled My Ordinary Life, which aired from April to September 2011. Director Tatsuya Ishihara captured the source material's unique blend of slapstick and emotional resonance, creating a visual experience that critics initially praised for its animation quality even if they found the humor inconsistent at first. Later retrospective analysis has shifted this perspective, with many now ranking it among the greatest comedy shows ever produced. Western releases faced early hurdles when Bandai Entertainment cancelled the license due to downsizing, but Vertical eventually published the English manga starting in March 2016 while Funimation handled the home video release with subtitles in 2017 and a full dub in 2019.
