Henri Nestlé founded the company in 1866 to create a nutritious substitute for breast milk that could save infants from malnutrition. The original product, Farine Lactée Henri Nestlé, launched in Vevey, Switzerland, and grew into a multinational empire over the next century. By 2014, the organization became the largest publicly traded food company by revenue, a position it maintains today.

The corporation currently manages 335 factories across 185 countries with a workforce of approximately 271,000 employees. Its portfolio covers coffee, confectionery, pet care, nutrition, and medical foods. Twenty-nine brands generate more than one billion Swiss francs annually, including Nespresso, Kit Kat, Maggi, and Purina.

Recent years have seen significant shifts in strategy and leadership. Ulf Mark Schneider serves as Group CEO while Philipp Navratil oversees key business units. In June 2026, Nestlé formed Peranel, a $5.6 billion joint venture with Platinum Equity, by selling a 50% stake in its water business. This move aimed to reduce debt without divesting from the long-term partnership with L'Oréal or exiting the beverage sector entirely. [edit]
