NESTA
United Kingdom"The UK's innovation agency for social good"
About
Originally established as the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, Nesta operates as an independent charity dedicated to designing, testing, and scaling solutions for society's most pressing challenges. The organization launched in 1998 with a £250 million endowment from the National Lottery, later receiving an additional £95 million in 2002. It transitioned from a government-funded non-departmental public body to an independent entity, allowing it greater strategic freedom while relying on investment returns from its endowment to fund its operations.
Headquartered at 58 Victoria Embankment in London, the organization employs approximately 306 people, including data scientists, designers, and behavioral experts. Under Chief Executive Ravi Gurumurthy, who took the role in 2019, Nesta adopted a focused strategy centered on three specific goals: ensuring every child has a fair start by age five, halving obesity rates in the UK, and drastically reducing home carbon emissions. This approach replaced a broader portfolio model with a mission-driven framework aimed at achieving systemic impact through rigorous research and practical experimentation.
Mission
Nesta exists to design, test, and scale new solutions to society's biggest problems. Its current strategy prioritizes three ambitious areas: giving children a fairer start by age five, halving obesity in the UK, and drastically reducing home carbon emissions. The organization combines academic research with practical trials and advocacy to drive tangible change across these sectors.
History
The organization was created in 1998 following a Labour Party manifesto commitment enshrined in the National Lottery Act 1998. Lord Puttnam served as the founding Chair while Jeremy Newton acted as the first Chief Executive. In its initial years, the body functioned as a non-departmental public body with a board appointed by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Its early mandate involved promoting talent, creativity, and innovation across science, technology, and the arts.
A significant early initiative resulted in the creation of FutureLab, an independent charity spun off in 2007 to develop new approaches to learning. Over time, the organization expanded its operational scope through wholly owned subsidiaries. These included BIT, which combined behavioural science with evaluation, and Challenge Works, which designed prizes to incentivize private sector innovation. By transitioning to an independent charity status, Nesta gained the flexibility to set its own strategic direction away from direct government funding.
In 2019, Ravi Gurumurthy became Chief Executive and introduced a sharpened focus on three specific missions. This shift moved the organization away from a broad portfolio approach toward concentrated efforts on early childhood development, obesity reduction, and home carbon emissions. Recent reports indicate ongoing engagement with heat pump schemes and energy efficiency, aligning with the goal of reducing home carbon emissions without major controversies or leadership changes reported in recent records.
