Neil McCauley

Neil McCauley is a fictional character inspired by a real-life professional criminal of the same name, born in Polk, Iowa on February 2, 1914. The real McCauley spent 25 years in prison, including eight years at Alcatraz with four in solitary confinement. After his release in 1962, he was pursued by Chicago police detective Chuck Adamson, who later shared the story with Michael Mann. McCauley is defined by his iron will and unwavering personal code: never get attached to anything you can't walk away from in 30 seconds. He lives a solitary, minimalist existence, owning only what he can abandon. He is calm, calculating, and business-like under pressure, but capable of deep loyalty to his crew. McCauley's arc follows his gradual violation of his own rule. After a botched armored car heist, he becomes hunted by Detective Vincent Hanna. He begins a relationship with Eady, a graphic designer, and intervenes in crew member Chris Shiherlis's marriage, showing attachment. During a bank heist, his crew is ambushed by police; most die. Despite having a clear escape with Eady, McCauley chooses to pursue revenge against traitor Waingro. He kills Waingro but is tracked by Hanna to LAX, where he is shot and dies in Hanna's arms.[edit]
