About
NCT, short for Neo Culture Technology, is a South Korean boy group formed by SM Entertainment that debuted in 2016. The group is built around a unique concept: unlimited members divided into multiple sub-units, each tailored to different cities and markets. This modular approach allows NCT to constantly evolve, with new members joining and existing members participating in various units. The group debuted with the unit NCT U, releasing the single "The 7th Sense" in April 2016. Shortly after, NCT 127, based in Seoul, and NCT Dream, a teen-focused unit, followed. In 2019, the Chinese unit WayV was launched under SM's Label V.
NCT's music blends hip-hop, R&B, EDM, and experimental pop, often described as "noise music" for its layered, aggressive production. The group has achieved massive commercial success, with albums like "Neo Zone" and "Sticker" topping charts in South Korea and the US. NCT 127's "Sticker" reached number 3 on the Billboard 200, while NCT Dream's "Hot Sauce" became a multi-million seller. The group's fandom, NCTzen, is known for its passionate support and elaborate fan projects.
As of 2026, NCT remains active, with all four main units continuing to release music and tour. The group has also expanded into full-group projects like "NCT 2018 Empathy," "NCT 2020 Resonance," and "NCT 2023 Golden Age," which feature members from all units. Despite member changes, including the departures of Lucas, Shotaro, and Sungchan, NCT continues to grow, with new members occasionally added through SM's trainee system.
Formation Story
NCT was conceived by SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man as part of his "New Culture Technology" strategy, introduced in early 2016. The concept aimed to create a group with no fixed number of members, allowing for limitless expansion and localization. Trainees were recruited through SM Global Auditions and street casting, then underwent intensive training in dance, vocals, and languages, often for years. Some members, like Johnny, trained for nearly a decade before debuting.
The first unit, NCT U, debuted on April 9, 2016, with the digital single "The 7th Sense," featuring a rotating lineup of seven members: Taeyong, Mark, Ten, Doyoung, Jaehyun, and others. This was followed by the debut of NCT 127 on July 7, 2016, with the EP "NCT #127" and the single "Fire Truck." NCT Dream debuted on August 25, 2016, with the single "Chewing Gum," focusing on a younger image. The Chinese unit WayV debuted in January 2019 under Label V, with members Kun, Ten, Winwin, Lucas, Xiaojun, Hendery, and YangYang.

Musical Style
NCT's musical style is characterized by its experimental and genre-blending approach, often incorporating elements of hip-hop, trap, R&B, EDM, and future bass. The group is known for its "noise music" aesthetic, with dense production, heavy bass, and complex vocal arrangements. Early tracks like "The 7th Sense" and "Fire Truck" set the tone with aggressive beats and rap verses. Over time, NCT 127 evolved to include more melodic hooks and polished pop, as seen in "Kick It" and "Sticker." NCT Dream started with bright teen pop but matured into urban R&B and hip-hop with albums like "Hot Sauce." WayV focuses on Chinese-language pop with a strong R&B and trap influence. The group's full-unit projects often showcase a wide range of styles, from ballads to hard-hitting dance tracks.

Cultural Impact
NCT has significantly influenced the K-pop industry with its innovative "limitless" concept, inspiring other groups to explore rotational or sub-unit structures. The group's international appeal helped expand K-pop's global reach, particularly in the US and China. NCT 127's appearances on American television shows like "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and performances at events like the Global Citizen Festival boosted K-pop's visibility. WayV played a key role in bridging Korean and Chinese music markets. NCT's fashion and choreography, especially the intricate dance moves in songs like "Cherry Bomb" and "Kick It," have been widely imitated. The group also contributed to the rise of fan-driven projects, such as streaming parties and charity initiatives, setting trends in fandom culture.
Fandom Culture
NCT's fandom is called NCTzen, a portmanteau of "NCT" and "citizen." The official fan color is neon green, and the lightstick, known as the NCTzen Lightstick, features a globe-shaped design with a green LED. NCTzens are known for their organized fan projects, including birthday ads for members, charity donations, and streaming campaigns. The fandom has a strong online presence, with dedicated social media accounts and fan sites. Notable traditions include the "NCT 127 Day" celebrations on July 7 and "NCT Dream Day" on August 25. The fandom also engages in voting for music show wins and year-end awards, often mobilizing quickly to support the group.
Awards Won (136)
NCT and its sub-units have won numerous awards at major ceremonies, including MAMA, Golden Disc Awards, and Seoul Music Awards. Notable wins include Best New Male Artist at MAMA 2016, Album of the Year at Golden Disc Awards for 'Neo Zone', and multiple Daesangs (grand prizes) for album sales.
