NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan LLC

NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan LLC, often shortened to NBCUEJ, is a Tokyo-based company that produces and distributes anime, music, and home entertainment. Operating as a subsidiary of NBCUniversal under Comcast, it plays a significant role in the Japanese animation industry. The company's roots trace back to 1981, when Pioneer Corporation established LaserDisc Corporation to manufacture LaserDisc players. By 1989, it had evolved into Pioneer LDC, expanding into anime, music, and film. After a 2003 acquisition by Dentsu, it became Geneon Entertainment, a name familiar to many anime fans in the early 2000s. In 2008, a merger with Universal Pictures Japan created Geneon Universal Entertainment Japan, and in 2013, the company adopted its current name.

NBCUEJ has been behind a wide range of popular anime series, including A Certain Magical Index, The Heroic Legend of Arslan, Danganronpa: The Animation, Golden Kamuy, Seraph of the End, and Is the Order a Rabbit?. While its name might suggest a direct link to Universal Pictures' theatrical releases, NBCUEJ does not handle those in Japan. Instead, Toho, through Toho-Towa, exclusively distributes Universal's films to Japanese theaters. The company focuses on anime production, music publishing, and home video distribution, carving out a distinct niche in the entertainment landscape. Recent activities include announcements for new cast members for the anime My Stepmother and Stepsisters Aren't Wicked and a trailer for Reincarnated as a Sword Season 2. They also presented world premiere screenings for Inexpressive Kashiwada and Expressive Oota and A Wild Last Boss Has Appeared! at Anime Expo 2025. [edit]
