NBA G League

The NBA G League is the official minor league of the National Basketball Association, designed to develop players, coaches, and referees. Founded in 2001 as the National Basketball Development League, it rebranded to the NBA Development League in 2005 before taking on its current name as part of a sponsorship deal with Gatorade. As of the 2024-25 season, the league features 31 teams, with all but the Mexico City Capitanes either directly owned or single-affiliated with an NBA franchise. The Capitanes operate as the league's only independent team, based in Mexico City, expanding the G League's reach beyond the United States.

Games are played from November to April, with a 50-game regular season followed by playoffs. The G League serves as a proving ground for young talent, NBA veterans on rehabilitation assignments, and international prospects. It has become an essential pipeline for the NBA, with roughly one-third of NBA players having G League experience. The NBA G League began in 2001 as the National Basketball Development League, a direct response to the NBA's need for a formalized farm system. The league launched with eight teams, all located in the southeastern United States. It replaced the previous system of independent minor leagues, such as the Continental Basketball Association, offering the NBA more control over player development.
