Naughty by Nature

Naughty by Nature is an American hip-hop group from East Orange, New Jersey. They are renowned for their successful singles such as "O.P.P." and "Hip Hop Hooray," and for winning the first-ever Grammy for Best Rap Album with Poverty's Paradise. The group that would become Naughty by Nature originated in East Orange, New Jersey, forming in 1986 when three high school friends, Treach, Vin Rock, and DJ Kay Gee, began performing together. Meeting at East Orange Campus High School, they quickly bonded over a shared love of hip-hop and started their journey as a crew called The New Style. They honed their skills by performing at school talent shows and engaging in spirited battles at local clubs. On January 1, 1989, The New Style independently released their debut album, Independent Leaders. This album featured "Scuffin' Those Knees," which garnered attention as a minor regional hit. Their talent soon caught the eye of fellow New Jersey native Queen Latifah, who recognized their potential and took the aspiring group under her wing. She signed them to her Flavor Unit management company and was instrumental in introducing them to Tommy Boy Records, helping them secure a pivotal record deal.

Under Queen Latifah's mentorship and guidance, the group underwent a significant rebranding, changing their name to Naughty by Nature, a moniker that perfectly encapsulated their playful yet edgy stage presence.
