Nate

Nate Wright is the title character of the comic strip and book series Big Nate. He first appeared on January 7, 1991, in the debut daily strip created by Lincoln Peirce. An 11-year-old sixth grader at P.S. 38, Nate lives with his single father and older sister after his parents divorced when he was young. From the start he establishes himself as a kid who would rather draw comics or play music than focus on schoolwork. [edit]

Nate bursts with energy and self-confidence that often tips into cockiness. He believes he is destined for greatness even though his grades stay average and he lands in detention constantly. His optimism helps him bounce back from every setback within minutes. He loves drawing cartoons, playing drums, and cheering for the Chicago Cubs. Rules and authority figures annoy him, especially his social studies teacher Mrs. Godfrey, whom he privately calls the Hairy Woman.

Despite his self-absorbed streak, Nate stays loyal to his small group of friends and shows real creativity when something catches his interest. He can seem lazy in class yet turns intense and focused when it comes to rock music trivia, comic history, or beating rival schools in sports. [edit]

Throughout more than three decades of strips and two dozen books, Nate's core personality holds steady while he slowly learns to handle disappointment and value his friends. Early stories revolve around his endless campaign against homework, his massive crush on classmate Jenny, and his rivalry with straight-A student Gina. He forms the band Enslave the Mollusk with his buddies Teddy and Francis, dreams up wild schemes, and breaks the school detention record repeatedly.

Later books and the Nickelodeon animated series expand these ideas into longer plots involving school elections, rival basketball teams, and summer camp adventures. Nate gradually gains small moments of self-awareness. He still overestimates his talents and complains loudly when things go wrong, but he also starts to channel his energy more productively and appreciates the people who stick by him. The comic appears in hundreds of newspapers while the book series has sold millions of copies and regularly lands on bestseller lists. Kids see themselves in his battles with homework, detentions, and unfair teachers. The 2022 Nickelodeon animated series introduced Nate to new viewers while staying true to his energetic spirit. Teachers sometimes use the books in classrooms because they connect with reluctant readers. Fans especially love quoting his over-the-top complaints and celebrating his small victories.
