About
The franchise began operations on January 1, 2017, as an expansion project designed to bring Major League Soccer to Tennessee's capital. After two competitive seasons in the USL Championship starting in 2020, the club secured a spot in the top tier of American soccer for the 2022 season within the Eastern Conference.
Gary Smith has guided the team since its inception, establishing a tactical identity that blends high energy with disciplined structure. The coaching staff includes Rumba Munthali and B.J. Callaghan, who support Smith in developing the squad from a regional contender into a consistent playoff participant.
On May 4, 2025, the organization captured its first major trophy by winning the U.S. Open Cup. This victory marked a significant milestone for the young club, proving its ability to compete against established teams across the country. By August 2026, Nashville continued to assert itself as a dominant force, highlighted by a decisive 4-1 home victory over Inter Miami CF where Lionel Messi missed a penalty kick.
History
Nashville Soccer Club started its journey in the USL Championship in 2020, playing select matches at Nissan Stadium before moving permanently to their dedicated facility. The team spent those initial years cultivating a strong local following and refining their approach under head coach Gary Smith.
The move to MLS in 2022 brought the club to Geodis Park in the Germantown neighborhood of downtown Nashville. This state-of-the-art venue replaced the shared NFL stadium experience, offering an intimate setting tailored specifically for soccer fans. The club adopted the moniker "Music City's Soccer Club" to reflect the deep integration of local culture into its brand.
Success arrived quickly on the national stage when the team defeated the Philadelphia Union 2-1 in the final of the 2025 U.S. Open Cup. That triumph validated the organization's growth strategy and placed them among the elite clubs in American soccer history.
