Naftali Bennett

Naftali Bennett, born March 25, 1972, in Haifa, is an Israeli politician, businessman, and former soldier who served as the prime minister of Israel from 2021 to 2022. The son of American immigrants, Bennett grew up in Haifa and later joined the Israel Defense Forces, where he served in the elite Sayeret Matkal and Maglan special forces units, commanding numerous combat operations. After his military service, he turned to technology entrepreneurship, co-founding the cybersecurity company Cyota in 1999, which was sold in 2005 for $145 million. He later served as CEO of Soluto, a cloud computing firm, which sold in 2013 for a reported $100–130 million. Bennett entered politics in 2006 as Chief of Staff for Benjamin Netanyahu, a role he held until 2008. He then directed the Yesha Council from 2010 to 2012, and in 2011 co-founded the My Israel movement with Ayelet Shaked. In 2012, he became leader of The Jewish Home, a religious Zionist and far-right party. Under his leadership, the party won 12 seats in the 2013 Knesset election. Bennett served as Minister of Economy and Religious Services from 2013 to 2015, then as Minister of Education from 2015. In December 2018, he left The Jewish Home to form the New Right party. After losing his Knesset seat in April 2019, he was dismissed as Education Minister, but regained his seat in September 2019 and briefly served as Minister of Defense. In the 2021 election, Bennett's Yamina party won 7 seats. He struck a power-sharing deal with Yair Lapid, becoming prime minister on June 13, 2021, with Lapid set to take over in 2023. However, the coalition's instability led to Bennett announcing the Knesset's dissolution in June 2022. He stepped down as prime minister on July 1, 2022, and served as alternate prime minister under Lapid until November 2022.
