N26
Germany"The bank you'll love"
About
In August 2013, Valentin Stalf and Maximilian Tayenthal founded what would become one of Europe's most valuable neobanks. The company launched as Papayer GmbH, initially offering a prepaid Mastercard for teenagers in February 2014. But adults kept asking for the same service, so the founders pivoted. After €2 million in seed funding in June 2014, they renamed to Number26 GmbH and built a full transaction account for general consumers. The name N26 came later in 2016, inspired by a Rubik's Cube: a standard 3x3x3 cube has 26 visible smaller cubes (27 minus one hidden).
N26 received a full German banking license from BaFin in 2016, freeing it from dependence on Wirecard as a backend partner. The first mobile banking app launched on January 26, 2015. Today the company operates across 24 European markets, serving about 4.8 million active customers with roughly 10 million registered accounts. All services are delivered through a mobile-first, app-based platform using SEPA for seamless cross-border transactions.
Revenue hit €440 million in 2024, a 40% increase year-on-year, and annual transaction volume reached €140 billion. The company's peak valuation of $9 billion came in 2021 after investments from Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, Tencent, Insight Partners, and Singapore's GIC Sovereign Wealth Fund. By 2023, Allianz sold its stake at a $6 billion valuation. N26 has not raised capital since 2021 and says it can reach profitability without additional funding.
Regulatory troubles have marked the company's trajectory. In 2022, BaFin ordered tighter anti-money laundering controls and capped new customer acquisitions. The cap expired in 2024, spurring a jump in sign-ups. But as early 2026, fresh compliance failures around internal risk controls threatened the founders' roles. Plans emerged to remove Stalf and Tayenthal from executive positions, with Marcus W. Mosen slated as interim co-CEO. The governance crisis represents the company's biggest challenge since founding.
