Mushoku Tensei
"Jobless Reincarnation"
Rifujin na Magonote
Overview
Rifujin na Magonote's Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation reimagines the isekai genre with a brutally honest protagonist. Rudeus Greyrat was a 34-year-old shut-in, obese and jobless, when he died and woke up as a baby in a world of swords and sorcery. Armed with the memories of his past life, he vows to live this one fully, but his adult mind in a child's body creates constant tension. The series follows his growth from a gifted toddler studying magic to a flawed young man navigating relationships, trauma, and a looming disaster called the Man-God's prophecy. It never shies away from Rudeus's past sins or his present struggles, making his journey feel earned rather than wish-fulfillment.
Originally a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō starting November 2012, the print edition launched under Media Factory's MF Books imprint on January 23, 2014, with illustrations by Shirotaka. The first volume runs 304 pages, blending fantasy adventure with slice-of-life and mature themes. The story's unflinching look at redemption and its detailed worldbuilding helped it stand out among light novels. A manga adaptation by Yuka Fujikawa began in Monthly Comic Flapper in June 2014, and Seven Seas Entertainment brought both the manga and light novels to North America. Studio Bind produced an anime that aired its first season from January to December 2021, followed by a second season from July 2023 to July 2024. A third season is scheduled for July 2026.
