Out of the Blue

Electric Light Orchestra released Out of the Blue on September 19, 1977, via Jet Records with distribution handled by United Artists in the US and Polydor internationally. This double album marked a significant expansion of the band's sound, featuring over forty musicians on select tracks to create a massive wall of sound. Jeff Lynne served as the primary producer and songwriter, playing nearly every instrument himself alongside drummer Bev Bevan. The record spans twenty-four tracks across four sides, exploring themes from personal relationships to cosmic wonder while maintaining a cohesive symphonic rock structure.

The album reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and number six on the US Billboard 200, eventually selling over fifteen million copies worldwide. It earned a 4x Platinum certification from the RIAA in the United States and achieved Platinum status in the UK. While the collection includes hits like "Turn to Stone" and "Don't Bring Me Down", the final movement titled "Mr. Blue Sky" stands out as the most recognizable track. Written in a major key to contrast with the preceding melancholic movements of the "Concerto for a Rainy Day" suite, the song was intended to evoke joy and relief after a storm. [edit]
