    Overview

James Gray returned to the crime genre with a film that feels less like a blockbuster and more like a personal letter to his own upbringing in Brooklyn. Set in 1988, the story tracks the fracture within the Grusinsky family as the Russian mob targets them for disrupting drug operations. The narrative splits the family into three distinct worlds: the rigid authority of father Burt, the weary duty of son Joseph, and the hedonistic rebellion of Bobby.

What sets this apart from standard cop dramas is how it treats the criminal underworld not as a villainous caricature but as a seductive alternative lifestyle that Bobby has embraced. The tension builds slowly through quiet dinners and tense bar conversations before exploding into violence. Robert Duvall anchors the film with a performance that balances toughness with a palpable sense of loss, while Joaquin Phoenix brings a chaotic energy that keeps the audience guessing about his true allegiances.

Bobby Green runs The Heat, a pulsating nightclub in Brooklyn where the air smells of expensive perfume and danger. He lives a life funded by Vadim Nezhinski, a lieutenant for the Russian Bratva who sees Bobby as a useful pawn in their expansion across New York City. While Bobby enjoys the nightlife and the company of dancer Amada Juarez, he carries a heavy secret. His father, Captain Burt Grusinsky, leads the NYPD's Vice Squad with an iron will that has made him a legend among cops and a nightmare for criminals. Bobby's older brother, Joseph, follows in their father's footsteps as a patrol officer, though he struggles with the emotional weight of the job and the distance between himself and his rebellious sibling.

The fragile peace shatters when the Bratva decides to eliminate Burt Grusinsky. Pavel Lubyarsky, the ruthless leader of the organization, views the captain as the only obstacle standing between them and total control of the boroughs. They launch a brutal attack on Joseph during a routine patrol, leaving him hospitalized and vulnerable. This act of aggression forces the family to confront the reality that their separation from each other has left them exposed.

Bobby finds himself squeezed between two worlds. The mob pressures him to facilitate their operations and betray his family, threatening to kill those he loves if he refuses. Meanwhile, Joseph recovers from his injuries and realizes that traditional police tactics are failing against such a sophisticated enemy. The pressure mounts until Bobby's nightclub becomes a target itself. A violent raid leaves the club in ruins and Bobby fighting for his life. As the FBI steps in and the police close in, Bobby must decide if he can truly abandon the life he knows or if the pull of his past will destroy everyone he cares about.

The middle section of the film focuses heavily on the shifting dynamics between the brothers. Joseph tries to reach out to Bobby, hoping to bring him back into the fold, but Bobby pushes him away, terrified that his association with the mob will drag his brother down further. The situation escalates when the mob attempts to frame Bobby for a murder they committed, forcing him to go on the run. He eventually turns himself in, seeking protection, which leads to a series of high-stakes confrontations that test the limits of his loyalty to both his family and his code.

As the climax approaches, the entire family is drawn together by the threat of annihilation. Burt, despite his age and injuries, refuses to stay behind while his sons fight. The film builds to a series of intense set pieces, including a chaotic shootout in a hospital corridor and a final confrontation at the docks. Every character faces a moment of truth where they must choose between survival and sacrifice. The narrative threads weave together as the Grusinskys realize that their strength lies not in their individual roles but in their unity against a common enemy.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

While We Own the Night boasts stellar performances from its lead actors and a visually rich depiction of 1980s New York, it struggles with a convoluted plot and uneven pacing. Critics noted that the film's attempt to blend intimate family drama with high-octane gangster action often feels disjointed, though the direction by James Gray and the chemistry between Phoenix and Wahlberg provide enough emotional weight to keep viewers engaged despite its flaws.
