    Overview

Rich Lee's feature debut reimagines H.G. Wells' alien invasion as a war fought not with tripods but through fiber optics and server rooms. Ice Cube plays William Radford, a surveillance analyst who discovers the monitoring system he built has become a highway for an extraterrestrial intelligence. Shot almost entirely through computer screens, phone cameras, and security feeds, the film updates the 1898 novel's imperial anxiety for an age of data breaches and smart devices.

The story unfolds in real time across multiple digital interfaces: hacked traffic cams, Zoom calls, encrypted messages, and news broadcasts. Radford's personal life collides with the crisis when his estranged children become targets. Eva Longoria plays a NASA scientist who helps decode the alien signals, while Clark Gregg's NSA director embodies the murky ethics of national security. The screenlife format, pioneered by producer Timur Bekmambetov in Searching, gives the invasion a claustrophobic immediacy.

With a $10 million budget, the film relies on smart writing and performances rather than spectacle. Critics praised Ice Cube's dramatic turn but noted the script's reluctance to fully explore its dystopian implications. The movie arrived during peak public debate around AI safety and government surveillance, making its central conceit, an alien intelligence that exists as pure data, feel unsettlingly plausible.

William Radford runs a massive surveillance program from a high-tech command center in Los Angeles. His team includes NSA Director Donald Briggs and FBI Field Agent Sheila Jeffries. Radford's work has cost him his marriage and alienated his two children, Faith and David, who see him as a distant, secretive figure.

The crisis begins when an unknown entity launches coordinated cyberattacks on global infrastructure. Power grids fail, communications networks collapse, and military systems go dark. Radford's surveillance network detects patterns that don't match any known human actor. He discovers his own agency's data has been compromised, and the very tools he built to protect the country are being used against it.

Radford teams with NASA scientist Sandra Salas, who identifies the attackers as extraterrestrial. Together they race to understand the invaders' origins and weaknesses while evading both alien forces and government operatives who want to silence them. Secretary of Defense Walter Crystal and the President struggle with an unprecedented crisis that exposes the fragility of modern civilization.

The film weaves together found-footage elements, news broadcasts, and surveillance camera feeds. Radford must protect his children while unraveling the truth, leading to a tense game where trust is scarce and betrayal lurks at every level of power.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

War of the Worlds updates H.G. Wells' classic invasion story with timely themes of surveillance and cybersecurity, anchored by Ice Cube's grounded performance. The screenlife format and social commentary feel fresh, but the film struggles with pacing and never fully commits to its more provocative ideas, resulting in a competent but uneven thriller.
