    Overview

In 2000, an American mortician working at a US Army base in Seoul dumps 20 gallons of formaldehyde down a drain, directly into the Han River. Six years later, the river gives birth to a grotesque, amphibious creature that begins snatching people from the riverside. The film centers on the Park family, who run a small snack bar along the river. When the monster grabs young Hyun-seo, her father Gang-du, a simple-minded man, and his eccentric family must navigate a city thrown into chaos by the creature and a government response more concerned with public panic than actual rescue.

Bong Joon Ho blends horror, dark comedy, and social satire into a single, propulsive narrative. The film was the most expensive Korean production at the time, with a budget of $11 million, but it earned nearly $89 million worldwide. Song Kang-ho, Byun Hee-bong, Park Hae-il, and Bae Doona anchor the story with performances that balance slapstick and genuine emotion. The creature, designed by visual effects company The Orphanage, required 120 CGI shots and was inspired by a real environmental disaster.

The Park family lives a modest life along the Han River in Seoul. Park Hie-bong, the grandfather, runs a small snack bar where his son Gang-du works alongside his daughter Hyun-seo, a bright middle-schooler. Gang-du is a well-meaning but slow-witted man in his 30s, still living with his father. The family also includes Nam-il, Gang-du's younger brother, an unemployed university graduate who spends his days drinking and brooding, and Nam-joo, their sister, a national archery champion with a sharp temper.

One sweltering summer day, a massive creature emerges from the Han River. It is a fish-like monster with a long tail, multiple legs, and rows of sharp teeth. It attacks the crowded riverside, snatching people and devouring them. In the chaos, the creature grabs Hyun-seo and drags her into the river. Gang-du, paralyzed by fear, watches helplessly.

The South Korean government, under pressure from the US military, declares that the monster may carry a dangerous virus. They impose a quarantine, rounding up anyone who had contact with the creature, including the Park family. They are taken to a containment facility, subjected to humiliating medical exams, and held against their will.

Meanwhile, Hyun-seo has survived. She is trapped in the creature's lair, a dark, sewage-filled drainage tunnel beneath the city. She finds a small pocket of air and uses a cell phone to call her father, though the connection is weak. Through these calls, the family learns she is alive.

The Parks must escape the quarantine, evade military patrols, and navigate the city's underground tunnels to rescue Hyun-seo before the creature returns or the government's containment operations kill her. Along the way, they encounter a homeless man who has tracked the creature's movements, protesters angry at the government's mishandling of the crisis, and their own personal failings. The story builds toward a climactic confrontation in the sewers, where the family must use their unique skills to face the monster.
