    Overview

Dan Stevens trades his Downton Abbey manners for a chilling smile in Adam Wingard's 2014 thriller The Guest. The film opens with a soldier named David arriving at the Peterson family's door, claiming to be a friend of their son Caleb, who was killed in action. He's polite, helpful, and seemingly too good to be true. The Petersons, still grieving, welcome him into their home, but soon a string of suspicious accidents and deaths begin to occur around town, and the family's teenage daughter Anna starts to suspect David isn't who he says he is.

Wingard, known for his work in horror and action, crafts a tight, 95-minute ride that blends 80s-style synth music with bursts of brutal violence. The film's modest $5 million budget is evident in its small-town setting, but the execution is sharp, and Stevens' performance is a standout, shifting effortlessly from charming to menacing. Despite a limited theatrical release that grossed just $2.7 million worldwide, The Guest gained a strong cult following on home video, praised for its style and twisty plot. It's a slick, tense thriller that keeps you guessing until the end.

The film opens with a young man in military uniform standing at the doorstep of the Peterson family home in a small New Mexico town. The man, calling himself David, introduces himself as a friend and fellow soldier of Caleb Peterson, the family's eldest son who was recently killed in action. David explains that Caleb had made him promise to visit his family if anything happened to him.

The Peterson family, mother Laura, father Spencer, teenage daughter Anna, and younger son Luke, are still deep in grief over Caleb's death. Spencer, a recovering alcoholic, is struggling to hold his life together, while Luke is being bullied at school by a group of older boys. Anna is a sharp, observant teenager who works at a local diner and is immediately wary of David's too-perfect demeanor.

David presents himself as the ideal guest. He is polite, charming, and effortlessly helpful. He fixes the family's broken car, gives Luke advice on dealing with his bullies, and even helps Laura around the house. When Luke's bullies confront him again, David intervenes with a calm but terrifying efficiency that leaves the boys shaken. He also takes Laura to a bar, where he handles a drunk who makes advances at her with brutal violence, cementing his status as a protector figure in the family's eyes.

However, a string of suspicious deaths begins to occur around town. A man who was involved in a bar fight dies in a mysterious accident. A local business owner dies in what appears to be a freak electrical fire. Anna, increasingly suspicious, begins to investigate David's background. She discovers inconsistencies in his story, his military records don't quite add up, and his explanations for his whereabouts don't align with what she observes. Meanwhile, David's presence seems to be having a destabilizing effect on the family, particularly on Luke, who begins to idolize him.

Anna's investigation leads her to a military facility where she encounters Major Carver, a stern officer who seems to know more about David than he is willing to reveal. Carver warns Anna to stay away from David, but his cryptic warnings only deepen the mystery. As Anna digs deeper, she uncovers evidence that David may not be who he claims to be, and that his connection to Caleb may be far more sinister than he has let on.

The film builds tension through a combination of 1980s-style synth music, stark cinematography, and Stevens' unnerving performance, which shifts seamlessly between boyish charm and cold menace. The central conflict revolves around Anna's growing certainty that David is a dangerous impostor, pitted against her family's grateful trust in their mysterious guest. As Halloween approaches, a holiday that features prominently in the film's visual design, the violence escalates, and Anna must convince her family of the truth before it's too late. The film's narrative is driven by the question of David's true identity, his connection to the military program that created him, and the escalating body count that follows in his wake.
