Shadow Force
United States"Family over everything."
Overview
Joe Carnahan's Shadow Force takes the familiar spy-couple-on-the-run setup and flips it: the hunters and the hunted trained together, bled together, and know every reflex the other has. Kerry Washington and Omar Sy play Kyrah and Isaac, co-leaders of a multinational black-ops unit who broke its no-attachments rule, faked their deaths, and vanished to raise a son. The film opened May 9, 2025, on a $40 million budget and pulled in just $5.4 million worldwide, one of the year's starker star-driven misfires.
What makes it worth a look for genre fans is the casting. Washington produced through her Simpson Street banner with Sterling K. Brown's Indian Meadows and Stephen "Dr" Love, and the ensemble stretches across four continents: Mark Strong as the implacable Jack Cinder, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Method Man as the family's lifeline, plus Natalia Reyes, Yoson An, and Ed Quinn filling out the operative ranks. Carnahan wrote the script with Leon Chills, and Juan Miguel Azpiroz shot it.
The pitch is a Black family at the center of a globe-trotting chase, with the parental instinct to protect a child colliding with skills built for killing. Reviews were mixed to negative, but the film found a second life on Prime Video and got a 4K Ultra HD release from Lionsgate dated September 29, 2026, more than a year after theaters.

Kyrah and Isaac met inside Shadow Force, a covert unit that answers to no single government and enforces one rule above all: no personal attachments. Their romance was a violation. When Kyrah became pregnant, the two made the only choice that kept them alive. They staged their own deaths, cut every contact, and resettled under new names with their son, Ky Sarr. For years the quiet held. They kept their heads down, moved when they had to, and taught Ky a life built on normalcy rather than tradecraft.
The break comes when a bounty lands on both their heads. The apparatus they once served sends a hunter team led by Jack Cinder, a man whose history with the couple runs deeper than a contract. Cinder's operatives were trained in the same methods Kyrah and Isaac mastered, which means the pursuit is less a manhunt than a mirror. Every ambush the hunters set, the couple can read. Every escape the couple attempts, the hunters can anticipate. The predator-prey dynamic inverts: the two most dangerous people in any room are now the ones running.
The middle stretch turns into a globe-trotting chase. Kyrah and Isaac work to keep Ky one step ahead while piecing together who ordered the hit and why. They lean on old contacts, including Auntie and Unc, who offer shelter, resources, and a reminder of the community the couple abandoned. Around them, a supporting roster of operatives moves on both sides of the fight: Parker, Moriti, Cysgod, Anino, Varjo, Patrick. Some are allies. Some are not, and the film keeps you guessing which is which.
Carnahan keeps the action close and grounded. Fights happen in tight spaces, with furniture and doorframes and whatever is within reach, rather than in blown-out spectacle. The emotional engine is simpler and harder: Kyrah and Isaac have spent years suppressing what they are, and every time they let it out to protect Ky, they become a little more like the people hunting them. The tagline, family over everything, is the thesis the whole film tests. The story builds toward a confrontation with Cinder's team that forces the family to decide how far they will go, and what they will give up, to stay together.

Critical Reception
Critical Consensus
Critics mostly found Shadow Force a serviceable but unremarkable action vehicle. They praised the charisma of Washington and Sy and the rarity of a Black family anchoring a globe-trotting spy thriller, while faulting a derivative script, uneven pacing, and set pieces that blur into the genre's background. A committed cast, familiar material.
