    Overview

In 2002, Warner Bros. brought the beloved Hanna-Barbera cartoon to live-action with a mix of CGI and practical effects. Directed by Raja Gosnell, the film follows Mystery Inc. as they reunite to investigate strange occurrences at Spooky Island, a theme park for college students. The cast includes Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, and Linda Cardellini as Velma, with Neil Fanning voicing Scooby-Doo.

The movie was a commercial hit, grossing over $275 million worldwide against an $84 million budget. Despite mixed reviews, it became a cultural touchstone for a generation, particularly for Lillard's performance, which later earned him the role of Shaggy's voice in animated series. The film also marked a departure from the cartoon's tone, giving the characters distinct flaws and a more cynical edge.

The film opens with Mystery Inc. solving a case at a haunted lighthouse. But their success is overshadowed by internal conflicts: Fred's obsession with elaborate traps, Daphne's frustration at being cast as the damsel, Velma's feeling of being taken for granted, and Shaggy and Scooby's focus on food. A heated argument leads to the group disbanding.

Two years later, the gang has gone separate ways. Fred hosts a failing reality show, Daphne writes self-help books, Velma works at a think tank, and Shaggy and Scooby are beach bums in Hawaii. They are summoned by Emile Mondavarious, the eccentric owner of Spooky Island, a popular theme park for college students. Mondavarious explains that strange supernatural events are scaring away visitors. He has hired each member separately to investigate.

Reluctantly reuniting on the island, the gang finds the park's gothic, voodoo-themed atmosphere unsettling. The students seem to be under a trance, behaving robotically. The team splits up: Fred and Daphne explore the main attractions, Velma investigates security and scientific anomalies, while Shaggy and Scooby stumble into forbidden areas, including a spooky swamp and the Castle of Doom. They encounter the park's voodoo-practicing manager, Voodoo Maestro, and his assistant N' Goo Tuana. They also meet Mary Jane, a laid-back employee who becomes an ally.

Clues point to a sinister plot involving voodoo rituals, a mysterious artifact called the Daphne Diamond, and a plan to unleash a great evil. The group must overcome their personal differences and confront the terrifying reality that the monsters might be real, not men in masks.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

Critics panned the film for juvenile humor and a failure to capture the cartoon's spirit, but praised Matthew Lillard's spot-on Shaggy. The film has since gained a cult following for its meta-humor and nostalgic value.
