Riddick

Five years after the events of The Chronicles of Riddick, the galaxy's most dangerous fugitive finds himself betrayed and abandoned on a scorched, lifeless planet. Stripped of his weapons and nursing a shattered leg, Richard B. Riddick must rely on his primal instincts and Furyan-enhanced senses to survive the hostile wildlife, including packs of jackal-like Mongrels and venomous sand-dwellers. Director David Twohy strips away the sprawling mythology of the previous film, returning to the lean survival-horror tone of Pitch Black.

When Riddick activates an emergency beacon in an abandoned outpost, he attracts two rival crews of bounty hunters. Santana leads a crude, undisciplined band hungry for the bounty, while Boss Johns commands a more professional squad with a personal vendetta. Riddick turns the hunters into the hunted, using the terrain and his abilities to sow chaos. But as monsoon season unleashes torrential floods, a far deadlier threat emerges from beneath the surface: the Mud Demons, giant scorpion-like predators that swarm anything with a heat signature.

Shot on a $38 million budget across locations in Canada and Namibia, the film brought in nearly $100 million worldwide. Katee Sackhoff, Dave Bautista, and Matt Nable join Vin Diesel in a cast that grounds the sci-fi action in gritty physicality. Riddick awakens on a desolate alien world, his leg broken and his body battered from a fall through the atmosphere. He sets the bone himself using a rock, a scene Diesel insisted on performing without a stunt double. Over the following days, he forges crude weapons from bone and metal, hunts small creatures, and finds shelter in a cave system. The planet's surface is brutal, scorching during the day, freezing at night, and Riddick's enhanced senses give him an edge against predators like the swift, pack-hunting Mongrels.

He discovers an abandoned mercenary outpost and activates its distress beacon, knowing it will bring bounty hunters. Two ships answer the call. Santana's crew lands first, a chaotic bunch led by a sadistic criminal who wants Riddick's head for the price on it. Soon after, a more disciplined team arrives under Boss Johns, a hardened hunter with a personal grudge: Riddick killed his son, the bounty hunter from Pitch Black. The two groups clash over jurisdiction, but Riddick uses the confusion to pick them off one by one.

Dahl, a no-nonsense soldier in Johns's crew, proves a formidable opponent, but Riddick respects her competence. He spares her life during an ambush, setting up a tense alliance later. Diaz, a hulking enforcer, and Moss, a pragmatic tracker, also survive Riddick's initial assaults. As the monsoon begins, the terrain floods rapidly, forcing the survivors to retreat to the outpost. Riddick knows what comes next: the rising waters awaken the Mud Demons, creatures that hunt by sensing heat and can burrow through solid rock.

The floodwaters trap the humans in the outpost's control room, with the Mud Demons scratching at the walls. Riddick reveals his plan: the predators are drawn to the heat signature of Johns's ship, which will explode if breached. By letting the creatures destroy the vessel, the blast will clear a path to Santana's smaller ship, which remains functional. The survivors must hold out until the attack comes.[edit]
