    Overview

Zhang Yimou's Raise the Red Lantern is a visually arresting period drama set in 1920s China, during the chaotic Warlord Era. The film follows Songlian, a nineteen-year-old university student forced by her stepmother to become the fourth concubine of a wealthy, unseen lord. Trapped inside the sprawling Qiao Family Compound near Pingyao, Shanxi Province, she enters a world where nightly rituals, lighting red lanterns, foot massages, determine which wife the master will favor. The system pits the four women against each other in a desperate scramble for status and survival.

Director Zhang Yimou, working from Su Tong's novella Wives and Concubines, crafts a claustrophobic chamber drama that feels as vast as an opera. Gong Li delivers a career-defining performance as Songlian, a woman whose initial defiance slowly curdles into despair. The film's bold color symbolism, red as both luck and oppression, and its rigid symmetrical compositions create an atmosphere of suffocating dread. The master's face is never shown, a deliberate choice that turns him into an impersonal force of patriarchal control.

Produced on a modest $1 million budget, the film grossed over $16 million worldwide and became one of Chinese cinema's first international breakthroughs. It won the Silver Lion at Venice and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Decades later, its influence echoes through the work of directors like Wong Kar-wai and Sofia Coppola, while its critique of systemic misogyny remains painfully relevant.

Nineteen-year-old Songlian arrives at the Chen family compound in a donkey cart, her university education cut short by her father's death and her stepmother's decision to marry her off. The compound is a fortress of gray brick walls and separate courtyards, each housing one of Master Chen's wives. First Mistress Zhuoyun, the eldest, has a son and seems resigned to her role. Second Mistress Zhuoyun (played by He Saifei) greets Songlian warmly, offering friendship. Third Mistress Meishan, a former opera singer, glares with open jealousy.

Songlian quickly learns the rules. Each evening, the master chooses which wife to visit. Red lanterns are lit outside her courtyard, she receives a foot massage, and the household staff buzzes with attention. The system is designed to breed competition. Meishan warns Songlian that the second wife is not to be trusted and urges her to bear a son to secure her position. Songlian clashes with her personal maid, Yan'er, who resents her new mistress and secretly dreams of becoming a concubine herself.

Songlian initially tries to stay above the fray, but isolation proves dangerous. She fakes a pregnancy to gain favor, a gambit that unravels when Yan'er discovers blood on her undergarments and reports it to Second Mistress. Doctor Gao is summoned, and the truth comes out. Master Chen orders Songlian's red lanterns covered with black canvas, a public humiliation that strips her of all status. In retaliation, Songlian exposes Yan'er's secret hoard of red lanterns, leading to the maid's death after she is forced to kneel in the snow.

On her twentieth birthday, a drunk Songlian accidentally reveals to Second Mistress that Third Mistress Meishan has been having an affair with Doctor Gao. The household's brutal traditions take over: Meishan is dragged to a rooftop room and hanged. Songlian witnesses the aftermath and loses her grip on reality, wandering the compound screaming accusations. The final scene shifts to the following summer, as a new bride, the Fifth Mistress, arrives. The other wives explain that Songlian has gone mad. She is last seen wandering her courtyard in the same pigtails and outfit she wore when she first arrived, completely detached from the world.
