Paddington Bear has made himself at home with the Brown family at 32 Windsor Gardens, but when he spots a rare pop-up book of London in Mr. Gruber's antique shop, he knows it's the perfect birthday gift for his beloved Aunt Lucy back in Peru. To earn the fifty-four pounds and ninety-nine pence, the earnest little bear takes on a series of odd jobs around the neighborhood. He tries his paw at window cleaning, barbering, and even carrying a sandwich board, each job ending in lovable chaos. Just as he saves enough, the book is stolen by a flamboyant neighbor, and all evidence points to Paddington.

Director Paul King returns with a sequel that expands the world of the first film while keeping the same handmade charm. Ben Whishaw voices Paddington with warmth and sincerity, while Sally Hawkins and Hugh Bonneville bring the Browns to life with their trademark affection. The newcomer is Hugh Grant as Phoenix Buchanan, a washed-up stage actor whose vanity and theatricality make him a perfect foil for our polite bear. With a budget of $40 million, the film grossed over $290 million worldwide, becoming a critical darling that many consider superior to its predecessor.

The production design by Gary Williamson is a standout, especially the fully functional pop-up book created by paper engineer Robert Sabuda, which took six months to build. Dario Marianelli's score adds emotional depth, and the visual effects blend seamlessly with live action. Paddington writes a letter to Aunt Lucy in Peru, describing his happy life in London. He visits Mr. Gruber's antique shop and discovers a magnificent pop-up book of London landmarks. The book is the perfect present for Aunt Lucy's 100th birthday, but it costs £54.99. Paddington resolves to earn the money by taking on odd jobs around the neighborhood. He becomes a window cleaner, but his enthusiasm leads to soapy disasters. He tries barbering, but his customer ends up with a lopsided haircut. He carries a sandwich board, but gets tangled in traffic. Despite the mishaps, he eventually saves enough and returns to buy the book.

But the book has been stolen. The thief is Phoenix Buchanan, a faded actor who lives next door. Buchanan discovers that the pop-up book contains clues to a hidden treasure left by its creator. He steals it, but Paddington's paw prints are found at the scene, and the bear is arrested for theft. He is sentenced to ten years at Wormwood Scrubs prison. The prison is a grim, gray place run by the cold Governor Curry. The kitchen is ruled by the fearsome Knuckles McGinty, a hardened criminal who makes terrible marmalade.

Instead of being crushed by prison life, Paddington brings his signature kindness. He befriends Knuckles by complimenting his marmalade and teaching him a better recipe. He organizes a book club, gets the inmates to wash windows (turning the prison into a tourist attraction), and paints the walls with colorful murals. Meanwhile, the Browns investigate the real theft. Mary Brown follows leads across London, while Henry Brown must overcome his cautious nature. They discover a piece of the pop-up book in Buchanan's house, confirming his guilt.

Paddington escapes prison with Knuckles's help, and the Browns track Buchanan to a steam train heading through the English countryside. The chase involves the pop-up book, the hidden treasure, and a high-speed train journey. The climax builds aboard the train, where Buchanan and Paddington face off on the roof.[edit]
