“Tommy O'Brien delivers a quietly powerful performance as Ross, conveying a world of guilt through subtle expressions and body language.”

Nolan Wilson Goff's Nobody Knows is a taut 20-minute crime drama that burrows into the psyche of a Texas teenager grappling with a fatal secret. After his brother dies in a car accident, quiet high schooler Ross Bottoms (Tommy O'Brien) tries to maintain normalcy in their small town, all while carrying the guilt of being responsible. The film follows Ross as he navigates friendships, a budding romance with Cheyenne Bridell (Liana Liberato), and the watchful eyes of locals like Vicki Wooldridge (Abby Wathen) and Dwayne Ashby (Bo Mitchell). Shot on a modest budget in rural Texas, the movie uses its tight runtime to build an atmosphere of simmering dread. Released in 2018, Nobody Knows earned praise for its naturalistic performances and unflinching look at guilt and adolescence.

Ross Bottoms is a quiet high school student in a small Texas town. After his brother dies in a car accident, Ross tries to go back to his normal life. He goes to school, hangs out with friends, and starts a tentative romance with Cheyenne Bridell, a kind girl who seems to understand him. But the weight of his guilt is crushing. Ross was driving the car that killed his brother, and he's terrified someone will find out.
The community around him begins to close in. Vicki Wooldridge, a local woman whose son was also in the accident, watches Ross with suspicion. His friend Dwayne Ashby tries to offer support, but Ross pushes him away. Even Cheyenne senses something is wrong, though she can't figure out what. Ross's guilt shows in small ways: he avoids certain conversations, flinches at loud noises, and isolates himself from the people who care about him.
As questions start to surface, Ross faces an impossible choice. He can keep the truth hidden and try to move on, or he can confess and face the consequences. The film builds toward a moment of truth, exploring the crushing burden of keeping a secret and the fear of what happens when it finally comes out.
Critical Consensus
A short but emotionally charged drama, Nobody Knows benefits from Tommy O'Brien's restrained performance and Goff's focused direction. The 20-minute runtime limits character development, but the film's exploration of guilt and secrecy resonates. It's a promising debut that shows restraint where other shorts might overreach.

“The film's strength lies in its restraint, it doesn't offer easy answers, leaving the audience to sit with the uncomfortable weight of Ross's secret.”
Sheri Linden
The Hollywood Reporter
“Liana Liberato brings warmth and empathy to her role as Cheyenne, providing a counterbalance to the film's somber tone.”
