Yoshiaki Kawajiri's Ninja Scroll is a brutal and visually stunning anime that helped define the cyberpunk-infused samurai genre of the 1990s. Released in 1993, the film follows Jubei Kibagami (voiced by Koichi Yamadera), a masterless ninja who wanders feudal Japan taking on jobs for money or personal conviction. His path crosses with Kagero (Emi Shinohara), a female ninja from a rival clan, and Dakuan (Takeshi Aono), a cunning spy for the Tokugawa shogunate. Together they face a conspiracy led by the demonic Genma Himuro (Daisuke Gori) and his band of warriors with supernatural powers.

Produced by Madhouse with a modest budget, the film became a cult hit internationally, earning a 7.8/10 rating on IMDb. Its blend of graphic violence, eroticism, and feudal intrigue set a new standard for adult anime. Jubei Kibagami, a wandering swordsman with a poisoned past, stumbles upon a village decimated by a plague when he is attacked by a giant stone monster. After dispatching it, he finds himself drawn into a conflict between the Tokugawa shogunate and a shadowy group known as the Eight Devils of Kimon. Dakuan, a Tokugawa spy, manipulates Jubei by poisoning him with a slow-acting venom, forcing him to cooperate. Kagero, a kunoichi from the rival Koga clan, joins them after her entire clan is slaughtered by the Devils.

The Eight Devils each possess a unique supernatural ability: Genma controls stone and metal, Benisato commands insects, Tessai wields a massive blade, Shijima can turn invisible, Yurimaru controls lightning, Zakuro spits acid, Mujuurou can transform into a liquid, and Mushizou controls worms. The trio must hunt them down one by one, learning their weaknesses while evading traps and betrayals. Jubei's past connection to Genma is slowly revealed: years earlier, Jubei was a member of a rebel ninja group that Genma betrayed and slaughtered, leaving Jubei the sole survivor.

The plot weaves through feudal politics as Dakuan reveals that the gold being moved by the Devils is meant to fund a shogunate takeover. The film's action sequences are punctuated by visceral choreography and creative violence, with each Devil's demise requiring a clever counter to their power. Kagero's own vendetta against a Devil who raped her adds a personal layer to the mission. By the end, the group is reduced to Jubei and Kagero, who must face Genma in a final confrontation that tests both their skills and their resolve.[edit]
