    Overview

Tom Harris, a burned-out CIA operative working undercover as a telecom engineer in Afghanistan, orchestrates a drone strike on an Iranian facility. The mission goes sideways when a journalist exposes his true identity to the world. Suddenly Harris is the most wanted man in the region, hunted by the Taliban, Iranian intelligence, and a Pakistani officer with a personal grudge.

Stranded hundreds of miles from safety, Harris must reach Kandahar, where a clandestine extraction awaits. He is joined by his Afghan translator, Mohammad Doud, a pragmatic family man whose collaboration with Americans now puts his own life at risk. Their journey across desert and mountain becomes a desperate race against time, forcing them to confront moral compromises and deepening their bond.

Director Ric Roman Waugh, reteaming with Butler after Angel Has Fallen and Greenland, stages tense action sequences against the stark landscapes of Saudi Arabia, where the film was shot. The script, drawn from writer Mitchell LaFortune's own experience as a Defense Intelligence Agency officer in Afghanistan, aims for authenticity in its depiction of covert operations and regional politics.

    PlotSpoiler-free

Tom Harris works undercover as a telecom engineer in Afghanistan, but his real job is running CIA drone operations. His cover is blown when a journalist uncovers his identity and broadcasts it globally. Now every militant group, Iranian unit, and Taliban faction wants him dead.

Harris is stranded deep in hostile territory with no backup and a rapidly closing window. His only ally is Mohammad Doud, his Afghan translator, a pragmatic family man whose association with Americans has made him a target too. Together they must traverse treacherous desert terrain, war-torn villages, and mountain passes to reach Kandahar, where a secret extraction point awaits.

Their hunters include Kahil Nasir, a ruthless Pakistani intelligence officer with a personal vendetta, and Roman Chalmers, a British MI6 operative with his own complicated history. The journey forces Harris to confront the moral compromises of his work, while Mo grapples with the danger his collaboration has brought upon his family. The narrative builds toward the climactic final stretch to Kandahar, where extraction awaits if they can survive the gauntlet of enemies closing in.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

Kandahar offers a serviceable action-thriller anchored by Gerard Butler's committed performance, but its generic plotting and lack of narrative surprises prevent it from rising above the crowded field of modern espionage films. The film's real-world setting adds texture, but the story follows a predictable escape-and-evade formula.
