    Overview

The prehistoric pals are back in their fourth outing, Ice Age: Continental Drift, a 2012 animated adventure from director Michael Thurmeier. This installment sees Manny (voiced by Ray Romano), Sid (John Leguizamo), and Diego (Denis Leary) separated from their herd when a cataclysmic event splits the continent apart. Their journey home becomes a perilous voyage across the ocean, forcing them to confront not only the vastness of the sea but also a formidable pirate crew led by the menacing Captain Gutt, played by Peter Dinklage. The film, produced by Blue Sky Studios and distributed by 20th Century Fox Animation, boasts a reported budget of $95 million and sailed past $877 million at the global box office, making it a significant success.

Navigating treacherous waters on a makeshift iceberg ship, the gang encounters new characters and faces dangers both natural and man-made. The familiar blend of family-friendly humor and high-stakes action continues, as the core trio must find a way to reunite with Ellie, Peaches, and the rest of their friends before the changing world leaves them permanently adrift. The film expands the Ice Age universe, introducing a new crew of pirate animals and exploring the early stages of global separation, all while maintaining the series' signature charm and slapstick comedy. With a rating of 6.389 out of 10 based on over 8,000 votes, it offered audiences another dose of prehistoric pandemonium.

Ice Age: Continental Drift kicks off with Manny, Ellie, Diego, Sid, and their herd enjoying a seemingly idyllic existence. However, the peace is disrupted as Manny's teenage daughter, Peaches, navigates the challenges of adolescence and her parents' overprotective nature. Peaches longs for independence and grapples with her identity, especially her developing feelings for Ethan, a popular mammoth who runs with a more daring crowd. Manny, a fatherly worrier, finds it hard to let go, creating tension with Peaches.

Meanwhile, Sid experiences a reunion with his long-lost family when his cantankerous Granny arrives. Granny is a surprisingly lively and mischievous elder, bringing her eccentric habits and a knack for causing trouble, much to Sid's dismay. Diego and his love interest, Shira, a saber-toothed tiger, also deal with their evolving relationship dynamics within the group.

The main crisis unfolds when a massive geological event occurs: the continents begin to fracture and drift apart. Manny, Ellie, Diego, Sid, Granny, and Sid's relatives are separated from the rest of their herd, including Peaches, Ellie, and Diego's companions. They find themselves adrift on a giant iceberg, which serves as a makeshift vessel carrying them out to sea. Their immediate priority becomes survival and finding a way back to their home and loved ones.

Their perilous ocean journey introduces them to a formidable new adversary: Captain Gutt, a ruthless pirate captain leading a diverse crew of prehistoric predators. Shira was formerly part of his gang. Gutt and his pirate fleet roam the seas, plundering and terrorizing other creatures. They capture Sid and Granny, compelling Manny and Diego to undertake a daring rescue operation.

As Manny, Diego, and Sid navigate the dangerous waters and constantly face the threat from Captain Gutt and his crew, they encounter various marine life and geographical obstacles. The group must learn to cooperate, overcome their personal anxieties and conflicts, and devise creative survival strategies in a world that is literally fragmenting. The journey back home transforms into an epic quest filled with action, humor, and the continuous challenge of keeping their fractured family united amidst the chaos of a changing planet. The film builds towards a race against time for Manny and his friends to reunite with Peaches and the rest of their herd before the continental drift permanently separates them.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

The latest installment in the Ice Age franchise offers a visually appealing, if somewhat tired, adventure. While it delivers familiar humor and a serviceable plot, it struggles to recapture the magic of its predecessors, relying heavily on established characters and predictable tropes.

The animation is bright and colorful, and the action sequences are energetic, but the story feels as thin and uninspired as the melting ice caps it depicts.

It's a visually busy, sonically loud, and narratively sluggish sequel that feels like it's going through the motions.

    The Hollywood Reporter

While the film is certainly colorful and features some amusing moments, it ultimately feels like a rehash of previous adventures, lacking the freshness and genuine heart that made the original Ice Age so endearing.

    The New York Times

    Rotten
The latest Ice Age installment is a familiar, if somewhat less engaging, adventure that offers plenty of slapstick and eye-popping 3D effects, but little in the way of new ideas.
