“The movie offers a fascinating look at the dark side of Hollywood but lacks the punch and clarity needed to make it truly memorable.”

United States"In a town built on fiction, truth is the most dangerous lie."
The autumn of 1959 found the golden age of Hollywood crumbling into cynicism. Louis Simo, a private investigator reeling from the death of his own daughter, takes a job that pulls him straight into the rotting heart of the industry. He is hired by Toni Mannix to look into the suspicious death of George Reeves, the actor who brought Superman to life. What begins as a routine inquiry into a suicide quickly spirals into a dark exploration of how the studio system devours its stars.
Director Allen Coulter guides this neo-noir through a landscape where reputations are currency and secrets are the only real currency. The film pairs Adrien Brody's weary detective with Ben Affleck's tragic performance as the man trapped behind the cape. It captures the specific decay of late-1950s Los Angeles without relying on flashy action or franchise tropes. Instead it focuses on the moral ambiguity of two broken men navigating a world built on lies.

The story opens in the fading light of 1959 when Louis Simo accepts a contract from Toni Mannix. Her husband Eddie runs the powerful Motion Picture Association and controls the careers of major stars. Toni believes the official ruling of suicide regarding her neighbor George Reeves does not fit the facts. She suspects blackmail or foul play involving the very people who made Reeves famous. Simo enters the orbit of the Mannix family and immediately senses the danger lurking beneath their polished veneer.
Simo tracks down Leonore Lemmon, the estranged sister-in-law of the deceased. She reveals that Reeves was struggling with depression after being typecast as a superhero. His career had stalled while he remained stuck in the public eye as a boy scout hero. Simo also meets Carol Van Ronkel, a former lover who hints at the intense pressure Reeves faced from the studio. The investigation uncovers a web of infidelity and manipulation centered around Eddie Mannix. He used fear and coercion to protect the studio's image at any cost.
As Simo digs deeper he finds evidence suggesting Reeves was being blackmailed over his relationship with Leonore. The studio executives wanted to bury the scandal to save the brand. Simo faces threats from unknown sources who want him to drop the case. He realizes that Reeves was not just a victim of circumstance but a man crushed by the persona that defined him. The line between the fictional world of Superman and the harsh reality of Hollywood blurs completely.
The tension builds as Simo pieces together the timeline of the night Reeves died. He discovers that someone close to the actor may have orchestrated the shooting to silence him. The narrative explores the destructive power of lies and the cost of fame. Simo must decide whether to expose the truth and destroy lives or let the lie stand to preserve the illusion. The mystery deepens until the final confrontation forces him to choose between justice and mercy.

Critical Consensus
Strong performances from Adrien Brody and Ben Affleck anchor this noir mystery but a convoluted plot and lack of emotional depth hold it back. The atmosphere effectively captures 1950s Hollywood yet the screenplay fails to deliver a compelling thriller leaving viewers confused rather than intrigued.

“While the film captures the mood of 1950s Hollywood the story moves too slowly and the characters remain too flat to sustain interest.”
