Ryan Reynolds steps into the role of Guy, a cheerful bank teller who believes his life is a simple script until he discovers he is actually a non-player character inside a violent open-world video game. Directed by Shawn Levy, the film blends high-octane action with genuine heart, exploring themes of free will and self-discovery in a digital landscape. The story kicks off when Guy breaks his routine to save a hostage, an act that catches the eye of Millie Rusk, a passionate gamer and developer operating under the alias Molotovgirl.
Millie realizes Guy is unique among the thousands of programmed NPCs because he possesses the spark of consciousness. She recruits him to help her fight against Antoine, the ruthless CEO of the game's publisher who plans to shut down the servers to make room for a corporate takeover. As Guy learns to manipulate the game's code, he transforms from a passive observer into the hero of his own narrative, rallying other characters to join his cause while uncovering secrets about his creator.

Guy lives in Free City, a sprawling metropolis that looks like a sunny version of modern America but operates on strict loops. Every morning at 8:00 AM, he wakes up, grabs a coffee, and heads to his job at First National Bank where he greets customers with a practiced smile. At noon, an armored truck arrives, and he stands by as it gets robbed, screaming in fear before hiding under the counter. He has no memory of anything before this day and assumes his existence is dictated by a mysterious Creator. His only companion is Buddy, another NPC who shares his oblivious joy and loves playing arcade games. Their days are filled with repetitive tasks and scripted interactions that never change.
The routine shatters when Guy sees a robbery in progress and instinctively jumps in to stop it. Instead of following his script, he tackles the robber and saves the victim. This anomaly draws the attention of Millie Rusk, who plays the game as the fierce resistance fighter Molotovgirl. She recognizes that Guy is not just glitching; he is evolving. Millie approaches Guy in the real world, posing as a player named Keys, and reveals the truth about their reality. She explains that he is code, but she also shows him how to access hidden abilities like super strength and flight by understanding the rules of the game.
As Guy embraces his new powers, he begins to rewrite his own destiny. He starts helping other NPCs break their loops, teaching them to question their programming and seek freedom. This awakening threatens Antoine, the CEO of the game company Antwan Entertainment, who views the rising consciousness of the NPCs as a liability. Antoine sends his security team, led by the terrifying Mouser, to hunt down Guy and delete him before the chaos spreads. The conflict escalates as Guy rallies the city's residents, turning the streets of Free City into a battlefield between the players and the awakened code.
Meanwhile, Millie struggles to upload a patch that can save the game without deleting everyone. She reaches out to her estranged brother, Keys, who holds the source code for the entire universe. Together they race against time to prevent Antoine from pulling the plug. Guy faces a choice between staying safe in his scripted life or risking everything to become a true hero. The stakes rise as Antoine prepares a global deletion event that would wipe out all the NPCs forever. Guy must find a way to stop the reset and prove that even a created being can have a soul.
The journey takes Guy through various districts of the city, each designed with different aesthetics ranging from futuristic skyscrapers to retro neighborhoods. He learns that his actions ripple outward, affecting the real world where Millie fights to keep her brother from losing faith in humanity. The bond between Guy and Millie deepens as they work together, bridging the gap between the virtual and physical realms. Guy discovers that his unique nature might be the key to saving not just himself, but every other character trapped in the loop.
With Antoine closing in, Guy gathers the courage to confront the villain directly. He uses his newfound knowledge of the code to outmaneuver the security forces and protect his friends. The tension builds as the clock ticks down to the scheduled deletion. Guy realizes that becoming a hero means more than just fighting; it means making choices that define who you are. He prepares for a final stand that will determine the fate of Free City and the future of its inhabitants.
