    Overview

Five Nights at Freddy's brings the wildly popular video game franchise to the big screen, delivering a horror film that leans hard into its source material's creepy atmosphere and deep lore. The story follows Mike Schmidt, a young man carrying the weight of a traumatic past, who takes a night security gig at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a long-abandoned family restaurant. What starts as a simple job quickly spirals into a nightmare as Mike realizes the animatronic characters that once entertained children now roam the halls with sinister intent. The animatronics were built by Jim Henson's Creature Shop as practical, full-scale puppets, giving them an unsettlingly tangible presence that CGI just can't match.

Director Emma Tammi, who stepped into the project after years of development hell, worked closely with franchise creator Scott Cawthon to ensure the film honored the games. Cawthon wrote the initial script and stayed involved through production, making this a rare adaptation that feels like it came straight from the source. The film's $20 million budget, modest for a studio horror release, allowed Blumhouse to focus on practical effects and set design, recreating the grimy, nostalgic feel of the abandoned pizzeria. New Orleans locations doubled for the fictional town where the restaurant sits, with the main set built inside a former entertainment venue to capture that specific decay.

Released simultaneously in theaters and on Peacock on October 25, 2023, the strategy paid off big time. The film grossed nearly $300 million worldwide, becoming one of the year's most profitable horror movies and proving the massive draw of the FNAF fanbase. Critics were split, with many finding it too tame for a horror film, but audiences embraced it, giving it an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The PG-13 rating sparked debate among fans who wanted more blood and tension, but the film's commercial success all but guaranteed the sequel that was already being planned.

Mike Schmidt is barely holding his life together. After losing yet another job when a violent episode triggered by repressed memories gets him fired, he's desperate to keep custody of his younger sister Abby. Their Aunt Jane, manipulative and cold, sees an opportunity to take Abby away, and Mike needs steady work fast to prove he can provide a stable home. A career counselor named Steve Raglan hooks him up with a position as the night security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a restaurant that's been closed for decades after a string of unsolved child disappearances.

The place is a wreck. Sticky floors, flickering lights, and the lingering smell of stale pizza and mildew. The animatronics stand frozen on stage: Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Bunny, Chica the Chicken, Foxy the Pirate Fox, and Mr. Cupcake on the counter. Mike's job sounds easy enough, sit in the security office from midnight to 6 AM, watch the cameras, and make sure nothing happens. But on his first night, the cameras show the animatronics moving on their own, creeping through the dark hallways toward his office. He learns from Officer Vanessa, a local cop with an obsessive interest in the restaurant's history, that the characters are dangerous and that he should never fall asleep on the job.

Mike's nights become a battle against exhaustion and terror. He starts having vivid nightmares that connect to the disappearance of his younger brother Garrett years ago, a trauma that shattered his family and left him with a fractured memory of what really happened. Meanwhile, Abby, left at home with a babysitter during Mike's shifts, sneaks into the restaurant and forms an unexpected bond with the animatronics. They seem drawn to her childlike innocence, drawing pictures with her and even protecting her from harm. Mike must navigate the increasingly hostile environment of Freddy's while keeping Abby safe from the sinister forces lurking within the walls. The animatronics aren't just malfunctioning machines, they're driven by something far darker, and the truth behind their rage is tied directly to the missing children and to Mike's own buried past.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

Five Nights at Freddy's is a faithful adaptation that caters primarily to its devoted fan base, but its PG-13 rating undermines the horror potential, resulting in a film that prioritizes lore and nostalgia over genuine scares, leaving general audiences with a largely underwhelming experience.
