    Overview

In 2005, director Tim Story brought Marvel's first family to the big screen with a film that aimed for fun over grit. The story kicks off when Reed Richards, a brilliant but perpetually broke scientist, pitches a daring space mission to his old college rival Victor Von Doom. Reed wants to study a cosmic storm that could unlock the secrets of DNA evolution. He recruits his ex-girlfriend Sue Storm, a geneticist, her hotshot pilot brother Johnny, and his best friend Ben Grimm, a former astronaut. Doom funds the trip, but when the storm hits their space station earlier than expected, the four are bombarded with radiation. Back on Earth, they discover their bodies have changed in wild and terrifying ways. Reed can stretch like rubber, Sue turns invisible, Johnny erupts into flames, and Ben becomes a walking pile of orange rock. The film leans into the chaos of adjusting to these powers, mixing slapstick with genuine heart. Shot across Los Angeles and Vancouver, the production cost $100 million and grossed over $333 million worldwide. Critics were lukewarm, but audiences embraced the lighthearted tone, making it a modest hit that set up a sequel.

The cast brought distinct energy to each role. Ioan Gruffudd played Reed as a nerdy, well-meaning leader who's better at science than romance. Jessica Alba's Sue balanced strength and vulnerability, often acting as the team's emotional anchor. Chris Evans leaned into Johnny's cocky charm, a performance that later helped land him the role of Captain America. Michael Chiklis, buried under a heavy foam latex suit, gave Ben a gruff tenderness that made the Thing the film's heart. Julian McMahon's Victor Von Doom oozed corporate villainy, though his transformation into Doctor Doom felt rushed. The script, credited to Michael France and Mark Frost, trimmed the comic's cosmic mythology into a grounded origin story. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's names appear in the credits, a nod to the creators who launched the Fantastic Four in 1961.

Reed Richards has spent years chasing a dream: building a space station to study a cosmic storm that he believes could revolutionize human genetics. But no one will fund him until Victor Von Doom, a wealthy industrialist and former classmate, offers a deal. Doom wants the glory and the scientific breakthrough for himself. Reed agrees, bringing along Sue Storm, his on-and-off girlfriend and a brilliant geneticist, her brother Johnny, a cocky pilot, and Ben Grimm, Reed's loyal friend and a former astronaut. The team launches to the station, but the storm arrives hours early. They scramble to shield themselves, but the radiation hits them full force.

Back on Earth, the changes begin. Reed's body becomes impossibly stretchy, elongating his limbs like taffy. Sue flickers in and out of visibility, frustrated by her lack of control. Johnny discovers he can ignite his entire body without getting burned, flying through the air as a human fireball. Ben's transformation is the most brutal: his skin hardens into a rocky shell, his body bulks up, and he gains superhuman strength. The public reacts with a mix of awe and fear. The military wants to study them. Reporters hound them. Ben, now called the Thing, retreats into isolation, blaming Reed for ruining his life. Johnny embraces the spotlight, racing cars and partying. Reed and Sue struggle to repair their relationship while trying to find a cure. The four are fractured, each dealing with their powers alone.

Meanwhile, Victor Von Doom has also been affected. The cosmic radiation gave him the ability to generate electricity and control metal, but it also corrupted his mind. He sees the Fantastic Four as obstacles to his plan to harness the cosmic storm's power for himself. He begins manipulating events, testing his abilities by causing blackouts and sabotaging the team's attempts to reverse their condition. When Ben's girlfriend Alicia Masters, a blind sculptor, helps him accept his new form, Ben rejoins the group. Reed, Sue, and Johnny start training together, learning to combine their powers. They realize they work best as a team, not as individuals. But Doom's schemes escalate, leading to a confrontation on the Brooklyn Bridge where he threatens to unleash the storm's energy on the city.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

While the film captures some of the lighthearted fun of its comic book origins, Fantastic Four is hampered by a predictable plot, uneven pacing, and a lack of depth, ultimately failing to live up to its potential.

This is a superhero movie that feels surprisingly grounded, even when its characters are flying or stretching.
