    Overview

Dracula Untold, released in 2014, reimagines the origin of Bram Stoker's famous vampire by grounding it in the historical figure of Vlad III Drăculea, the 15th-century Prince of Wallachia. Directed by Gary Shore in his feature debut and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the film stars Luke Evans as Vlad, a reluctant warrior who has forsaken his brutal past to rule peacefully. When the Ottoman Empire, led by Sultan Mehmed II (Dominic Cooper), demands a tribute of a thousand boys, Vlad refuses and seeks supernatural aid to protect his family and kingdom. The resulting pact with an ancient cave-dwelling vampire (Charles Dance) grants him immense power for three days, but at the cost of his humanity.

Shot primarily in Northern Ireland with additional locations in Romania, the film cost $70 million to produce and went on to earn over $217 million worldwide, making it a commercial success despite mixed critical reception. The score was composed by Ramin Djawadi, whose work for Game of Thrones lent a suitably epic, choral-heavy sound. The film was originally intended to launch Universal's Dark Universe franchise, but subsequent plans were abandoned after the 2017 Mummy reboot underperformed.

In 15th-century Transylvania, Prince Vlad Tepes (Luke Evans) has set aside his fearsome reputation as the Impaler, choosing instead to govern with fairness and to raise his young son Ingeras (Art Parkinson) alongside his wife Mirena (Sarah Gadon). Their peace is shattered when an emissary from Sultan Mehmed II (Dominic Cooper) arrives demanding a thousand Transylvanian boys to be conscripted into the Ottoman army, a practice known as devshirme. Vlad himself was taken as a child and trained as a warrior by the Ottomans, and he refuses to subject his people to the same fate.

Mehmed escalates his demands, threatening to invade and take Vlad's own son. Outnumbered and outmatched, Vlad rides to Broken Tooth Mountain, a cursed peak where locals claim a monstrous being dwells. In a cave, he finds an ancient Master Vampire (Charles Dance) chained to the rock, who offers Vlad a Faustian bargain: for three days, Vlad will gain the strength, speed, and command over nocturnal creatures of a vampire. The price is that he must resist the thirst for human blood; if he fails, he will remain a vampire forever. Vlad accepts, believing he can control the curse long enough to defeat the Ottoman army and then return to his family.

Transformed, Vlad unleashes his powers against the Sultan's forces. He commands swarms of bats to tear through enemy ranks, uses superhuman agility to slaughter soldiers, and dissolves into mist to evade capture. His brutal tactics revive his old moniker, Vlad the Impaler, and strike terror into the Ottoman camp. Yet each use of his abilities strengthens the bloodlust, and Vlad struggles to maintain his humanity. His wife Mirena serves as his anchor, but the three-day limit presses down on him as Mehmed's army proves larger and more resilient than expected. The narrative follows Vlad's race to destroy the Ottoman threat before the curse becomes permanent, while his internal battle against his own monstrous nature grows more desperate with every passing hour.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

Luke Evans gives a committed performance and the film has a polished visual style, but a generic plot, lack of horror, and deviation from traditional Dracula mythology disappoint. It plays more like a superhero origin story than a gothic horror, with the PG-13 rating further blunting its impact.
