“The movie is a triumph of both digital wizardry and old-fashioned storytelling, a summer blockbuster that treats its audience like adults and its characters like people, or, rather, like apes with souls.”

Planet of the Apes (Reboot) Collection
Ten years after the simian flu pandemic wiped out most of humanity, a fragile peace holds in the redwood forests outside San Francisco. Caesar, the genetically enhanced chimpanzee who led his kind to freedom in 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, now presides over a structured ape society built on law, family, and the strict moral code that apes do not kill apes. But when a small band of human survivors, led by the pragmatic Malcolm, ventures into ape territory seeking a hydroelectric dam to restore power to their crumbling enclave, the two species are forced into an uneasy contact that threatens to unravel everything Caesar has built.
Directed by Matt Reeves, this sequel trades the origin story for a tense, morally complex drama about trust, fear, and the thin line between civilization and savagery. Andy Serkis returns as Caesar, delivering a motion-capture performance of remarkable depth, while Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, and Keri Russell ground the human side. With a production budget of $170 million and a global box office haul of over $710 million, the film proved both a critical and commercial success, earning praise for its visual effects, Michael Giacchino's brooding score, and its refusal to paint either side as simply good or evil. It's a blockbuster that asks uncomfortable questions about what we owe to those we fear.

Set in 2026, the film opens in the aftermath of the simian flu that has decimated the human population. Caesar leads a thriving ape community deep in the forests, complete with sign language, rudimentary spoken English, and a hierarchical structure with trusted advisors like the gentle orangutan Maurice and the scarred, mistrustful bonobo Koba. Caesar lives with his mate Cornelia and their son Blue Eyes, while the apes have established a moral code that forbids killing their own kind.
Meanwhile, a small band of human survivors, led by the pragmatic Malcolm, lives in a fortified enclave in the ruins of San Francisco. Running out of power, they discover a hydroelectric dam deep in ape territory that could restore electricity. Malcolm leads a team including his wife Ellie and teenage son Alexander to repair it, leading to a tense encounter with the apes. Caesar, wary but open to peaceful coexistence, allows the humans to work under strict supervision, hoping to avoid violence.
However, Koba, who bears deep scars from human experimentation, sees humans as irredeemable threats and begins to sow dissent within the ape community. As the humans work on the dam, a tenuous bond forms between Caesar and Malcolm's group, but a hunting accident and a confrontation with the colony's militaristic leader Dreyfus test the fragile peace. Koba's resentment grows, and he secretly plots against both Caesar and the humans, setting the stage for a conflict that will determine the future of both species.
The central conflict is not simply apes versus humans, but the battle within Caesar's community between his vision of a peaceful, principled civilization and the darker impulses of fear and vengeance that Koba represents. As tensions escalate, the two species are pushed toward an inevitable confrontation, testing every character's loyalties and forcing Caesar to confront the limits of his compassion and the brutal realities of leadership in a world on the brink of war.
