    Overview

Tim Burton's 1988 fantasy comedy launches with a distinctively macabre premise. Adam and Barbara Maitland, a newly deceased couple from Connecticut, find themselves stuck in their own home after an accident. They try to scare away the new owners, the Deetz family, but fail repeatedly until they hire Betelgeuse, a chaotic supernatural exorcist played by Michael Keaton. The film blends dark humor with gothic visuals, creating a tone that feels both spooky and silly.

Produced on a modest budget of $15 million, the movie became a surprise hit, earning over $84 million at the box office. The cast features Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as the ghosts, while Winona Ryder shines as Lydia, the goth daughter who befriends them. Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Jones round out the human cast. With a rating hovering near 7.4 stars from thousands of viewers, the film established itself as a cult classic and launched a franchise that continues to explore this unique afterlife.

Adam and Barbara Maitland settle into their quiet life in rural Connecticut until a car accident cuts their story short. Waking up in their bedroom, they discover they are now ghosts bound to the property. They spend months learning the rules of their new existence: they cannot touch the living, they must stay within the house perimeter, and they only become visible if someone sees or hears them. Their peaceful haunting routine shatters when Charles Deetz buys the house for his girlfriend Delia and their teenage daughter Lydia. The Deetzes plan to turn the Victorian home into a modernist art installation, which threatens the Maitlands' spectral sanctuary.

The ghosts attempt traditional scares to drive the intruders out. Adam floats through walls and Barbara moves furniture, but the Deetzes attribute these events to drafts or pranks by a handyman named Otho. Delia becomes obsessed with the house's energy and hosts a séance to contact spirits. The ritual goes wrong and summons Betelgeuse, a bio-exorcist from the Netherworld who speaks in rapid-fire riddles and wears a striped suit. When the Maitlands accidentally say his name three times, he gains the power to leave the afterlife.

Betelgeuse offers to help the Maitlands evict the Deetzes, but his methods involve terrifying Lydia and corrupting the household. He transforms the living room into a surreal nightmare where gravity shifts and reality bends. The Maitlands realize they have unleashed a monster far worse than any living threat. They must team up with Lydia, the only person who understands the supernatural, to stop him before he consumes everything they love. The situation escalates toward a macabre wedding ceremony where Betelgeuse plans to marry Lydia to a demon, securing his place in the human world forever.
