About This Song
The song began life in February 1971 as a rough demo recorded by the short-lived supergroup The Arnold Corns. This early version featured David Bowie on vocals, Mick Ronson on guitar, and Ken Pyle on drums at Radio Luxembourg studios. It appeared later that year on the independent label B&C Records before Bowie reimagined it for his own career.
Bowie returned to the track in November 1971 with his backing band, The Spiders from Mars, recording a polished studio version at Trident Studios in London. This definitive take opened the landmark album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars when RCA released it in June 1972. The arrangement blends hard rock riffs with psychedelic elements and space-age themes, driven by a driving rhythm section and Bowie's own saxophone flourishes.
Mick Ronson provided the string arrangements and delivered a searing guitar solo that critics often cite as the defining moment of the composition. Although the song never hit the charts as a single during its initial run, its cultural footprint grew massively after appearing in the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy. The track remains a staple of live performances, bridging the gap between the theatrical Ziggy persona and raw rock power.
