Kodansha launched this monthly publication in November 1964 as Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine, initially operating on a quarterly schedule. The title shifted to a monthly format in April 1969, becoming Monthly Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine, before a brief suspension in 1974 led to its relaunch under the current name in May 1975. This rhythm allows creators more time to craft intricate plots and detailed artwork compared to their weekly counterparts.

The magazine hosts a wide variety of genres including action, comedy, drama, and science fiction. Notable series like Noragami by Adachitoka and Hiro Mashima's Dead Rock have found success here. The conclusion of Noragami: Stray God appeared in the February 2024 issue, while Dead Rock recently finished its Academy Arc in June 2026 with plans for a new storyline that winter.

Creators benefit from the extended timeline between issues, which supports complex narratives that might struggle in weekly serialization. Hiromu Arakawa utilized this slower pace to develop the intricate plot of Fullmetal Alchemist, though that specific work ran in Monthly Shōnen Gangan.
