    Overview

Monster House is a 2006 computer-animated horror-comedy that reimagines the haunted house genre through the eyes of three resourceful kids. Directed by Gil Kenan in his feature debut, the film uses performance capture technology to bring a suburban nightmare to life. Set over a single Halloween, it follows twelve-year-old D.J. Walters and his friends as they discover that the creepy house across the street is not just abandoned — it's alive, hungry, and determined to swallow anyone who steps on its lawn.

The film was produced by Robert Zemeckis's ImageMovers and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, with a budget of $75 million. It earned over $140 million worldwide and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. The voice cast includes Mitchel Musso, Sam Lerner, Spencer Locke, and Steve Buscemi as the mysterious Mr. Nebbercracker. With its blend of genuine scares and emotional depth, Monster House has become a cult favorite among family horror fans.

D.J. Walters is a cautious twelve-year-old who lives across from a decrepit house owned by the reclusive Mr. Nebbercracker. The old man terrorizes any kid who dares approach his property, and D.J. has learned to keep his distance. But on Halloween morning, when a little girl's tricycle rolls onto the lawn, D.J. and his best friend Chowder try to retrieve it. Nebbercracker erupts, chases them off, then collapses and is rushed to the hospital. The boys assume he's dead and that the house is now unguarded.

That night, D.J. sees the house's porch light flicker and a pizza delivery boy, Skull, vanishes after knocking on the door. The house also swallows a basketball, a lawnmower, and two police officers. D.J. and Chowder realize the house is a living monster that eats anything that comes near. They try to warn the adults — D.J.'s distracted parents and the teenage babysitter Zee — but no one believes them. They team up with Jenny, a smart girl selling candy for a fundraiser, who quickly grasps the danger.

The trio investigates and finds a hidden basement with old photographs and a strange furnace. They theorize the house is a golem, bound to its foundation, and that destroying its heart — the furnace — will stop it. They also discover a tragic backstory involving Mr. Nebbercracker and a woman named Constance. As Halloween night approaches, hundreds of trick-or-treaters are about to walk into the house's trap. The kids devise a plan to lure the house off its foundation, but the house awakens fully, rips itself from the ground, and chases them through the neighborhood.
