    Overview

In 2017, a Spanish heist series quietly landed on Antena 3 with a premise that sounded like dozens of others: a mastermind recruits eight criminals to rob the Royal Mint. But Money Heist, originally La Casa de Papel, had something different. It wore its heart on its sleeve, traded cynicism for melodrama, and made audiences fall for a gang of thieves in red jumpsuits and Salvador Dalí masks. Within a year, it became Netflix's most-watched non-English series, a global phenomenon that turned an Italian partisan song into a summer anthem.

Creator Álex Pina built the show around a simple, almost theatrical conceit: the robbers adopt city names, the hostages become characters, and the police investigation is a chess game orchestrated by a man who never enters the building. The Professor, played by Álvaro Morte with a quiet intensity, commands from a secret hideout while his team, Tokio, Berlín, Nairobi, and the rest, battle their own demons inside. The series blends heist mechanics with soap-opera emotion, shifting between tense standoffs and intimate flashbacks. It is a show that knows exactly what it wants to be: a glossy, high-stakes thriller about found family, resistance, and the price of freedom.

A man known only as The Professor recruits eight people with nothing to lose. Each takes a city name: Tokio, Berlín, Río, Nairobi, Denver, Helsinki, Oslo, and Moscú. After five months of training on a remote estate, they enter the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid, take 67 hostages, and begin printing €984 million. The plan lasts eleven days. The Professor directs everything from a secret location, manipulating the police investigation led by Inspector Raquel Murillo. Inside the Mint, tensions rise. Berlín's authoritarian leadership clashes with others. Hostage Mónica Gaztambide develops feelings for robber Denver, a classic Stockholm syndrome case that the team nicknames Stockholm. The hostages include Arturo Román, the Mint's director, who becomes a persistent antagonist. The first heist ends with the team escaping through tunnels, their money secured, but not everyone makes it out.

Three years later, the team is living in paradise. But when Río is captured by police, The Professor reunites the group. New members join: Palermo, Bogotá, and Marseille. Their target is the Bank of Spain, where 90 tons of gold sit in a vault. The plan is more ambitious, more dangerous. They must rescue Río and steal the gold. A new police adversary arrives: Inspector Alicia Sierra, pregnant and ruthless. The team faces military assaults, internal betrayals, and moral dilemmas. The heist becomes a symbol of resistance, with the robbers framed as folk heroes. Tokio narrates the story, her voice guiding us through flashbacks and time jumps. The series explores the cost of freedom, the bonds of family, and the lies we tell ourselves to survive.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

Money Heist blends high-stakes heist thrills with melodramatic character arcs and political commentary, creating an addictive, visually stylized series that transcends its Spanish origins to become a global phenomenon, though some critics note its reliance on soap-opera conventions and narrative stretching.

Money Heist is a rare show that gets more audacious and more gripping as it goes, a heist saga that keeps raising the stakes without losing its emotional core.

    Judy Berman

    Time Magazine

The series wears its influences, from Ocean's 11 to Heat, on its sleeve, but finds its own identity through its Spanish setting and its willingness to let its characters breathe between set pieces.

    Daniel Fienberg

    The Hollywood Reporter

It's ludicrous, it's overblown, and it's completely addictive. Money Heist knows exactly what it is, a glossy, melodramatic thriller, and leans into it with unapologetic flair.

    Lucy Mangan

    The Guardian

The show's greatest trick is making you root for criminals who hold people hostage, a moral complexity that elevates it above standard heist fare into something genuinely provocative.

    Ben Travers

    IndieWire

Álvaro Morte's Professor is a captivating antihero, and the ensemble cast brings a soap-operatic intensity that keeps you invested even when the plot strains credulity.
