Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt

When Yasuo Ōtagaki launched Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior on March 23, 2012, he set out to tell a war story that felt personal. The manga ran for 13 years, concluding in September 2025, with the 27th and final collected volume arriving on December 18, 2025. A limited edition of that last volume came with a special Thunderbolt Gundam case and a 96-page archive book. Viz Media handled the English release in North America, while Shogakukan Asia published it in Southeast Asia. By the end, the series had sold over 6 million copies.

The story drops you into the Universal Century's One Year War, specifically the Thunderbolt Sector, a graveyard of space debris where the Earth Federation and Zeon's Living Dead Division tear at each other. Two pilots drive the narrative: Io Fleming, a Federation ace given a prototype Gundam, and Daryl Lorenz, a Zeon sniper who lost his legs and now pilots a specialized mobile suit. Their rivalry is the engine of the plot, but the real subject is how war grinds people down. The manga exists in an alternate world line, branching from the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam, so it plays with familiar elements without being bound by the main timeline.

What makes Thunderbolt stick is its texture. Ōtagaki's mechanical drawings are obsessively detailed, and the anime adaptations layered a jazz soundtrack over the carnage, which became the series' signature. The ONA hit in 2015-2016, later re-edited into the films December Sky and Bandit Flower. The story doesn't flinch from physical and psychological trauma, and it refuses easy heroes.
