Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt

Yasuo Ōtagaki launched Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior on March 23, 2012. The manga ran for 13 years before concluding in September 2025. The final collected volume arrived on December 18, 2025, and included a special edition case for the Thunderbolt Gundam alongside a 96-page archive book of concept art. Viz Media released the English version in North America while Shogakukan Asia handled distribution in Southeast Asia. By the end of its run, the series had sold over 6 million copies worldwide.

The narrative unfolds during the One Year War within the Universal Century timeline. It focuses on the Thunderbolt Sector, a treacherous zone filled with debris from a shattered orbital colony where the Earth Federation Forces clash with Zeon's elite Living Dead Division. Two pilots anchor the story: Io Fleming commands a prototype RX-78NT-1 Alex Gundam, while Daryl Lorenz pilots a modified MS-06S Zaku II despite having lost his legs in combat. Their rivalry drives the plot forward through a gritty lens that emphasizes the physical and psychological toll of war rather than traditional heroism.

Thunderbolt distinguishes itself by treating mobile suits as extensions of broken bodies rather than just vehicles. The series explores themes of PTSD and dehumanization without offering easy resolutions or clear villains. An Original Net Animation adaptation produced by Sunrise aired between 2015 and 2016, featuring a jazz-infused soundtrack that became a signature element of the franchise.
