Overview
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, often shortened to MLBB or just ML, is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena game from developer Moonton. Launched in 2016, it was one of the first MOBAs built specifically for touchscreens, arriving on iOS and Android before expanding to HarmonyOS. The game quickly became a staple on phones across Asia and beyond, offering quick matches, a deep roster of heroes, and a competitive ranked ladder that rewards skill over spending.
MLBB pits two teams of five against each other in real-time battles. The classic mode features three lanes, jungle camps, and a base to destroy, with matches typically lasting 10 to 30 minutes. A Brawl mode strips it down to a single chaotic lane with random hero picks, perfect for shorter sessions. The game's matchmaking is fast, often pairing players within a minute, and its hero pool draws from fantasy and myth, from ninjas to cyborgs to creatures inspired by Southeast Asian folklore.
Moonton built a serious esports ecosystem around MLBB. Regional leagues like the Mobile Legends Professional League feed into the annual World Championship, and the game has been a medal event at the Southeast Asian Games since 2019. It was also selected for the 2026 Asian Games and the Esports Nations Cup. Despite legal battles with Riot Games over similarities to League of Legends, the game survived and thrived, settling disputes in 2024. A brief U.S. ban in 2025 was never enforced, and the game crossed 1 billion downloads worldwide. In 2026, Moonton was acquired by Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games Group, securing its future.
Gameplay
Matches in Mobile Legends are five versus five, real-time, and fast. The main Classic mode uses a three-lane map with jungle monsters, turrets, and a base that must be destroyed. Players pick from over 120 heroes, each with four abilities, and earn gold by killing minions, monsters, or enemy heroes. That gold buys items from a shop, and levels unlock skill upgrades.
A virtual joystick on the left moves the hero; tap buttons on the right trigger attacks and spells. The game also includes a Brawl mode with one lane and random hero selection, cutting match time to around eight minutes. Ranked play uses a draft pick system, where teams take turns banning and selecting heroes. A role queue lets players choose preferred positions before matchmaking.
Key mechanics include a jungle spell called Retribution, which helps secure monster kills, and battle spells like Flicker or Execute that every hero can carry. The build system is straightforward: items boost attack, defense, or magic power, and players can save custom loadouts. The game runs at 60 frames per second on most modern phones and supports graphics settings from Low to Ultra.
Story
The Land of Dawn is a fantasy realm where heroes from different mythologies and original creations clash. There is no single campaign, but lore is scattered across hero biographies, in-game events, and animated cinematics. The central conflict pits light against darkness, with characters like the dark elf Lancelot, the cyborg Claude, and the dragon warrior Masha representing different factions.
Events like Project Next and M-World expand the narrative through short films and comic panels, but the story remains background flavor. Players who want lore can read hero backstories in the collection menu, where each hero has a paragraph or two explaining their origins and motivations. For example, the hero Hayabusa is a ninja seeking revenge, while Angela is a robotic doll built to heal. The game treats story as seasoning, not the main dish.
