Moana

Moana is the daughter of Chief Tui and Sina, born on the island of Motunui. Her people once sailed beyond the reef, but after the demigod Maui stole the heart of Te Fiti, the ocean became dangerous and the villagers stopped voyaging. As a toddler, Moana felt a deep connection to the ocean, which chose her to restore the heart of Te Fiti. Her grandmother Tala, the village's spiritual leader, recognized Moana's calling and encouraged her to follow her destiny. [edit]

Moana is determined, optimistic, and brave. She is deeply loyal to her family and people, but feels a restless pull toward the ocean. She is resourceful and quick to learn, often thinking on her feet. Moana values her culture and heritage, and she is not afraid to challenge authority when she believes it is right. In the first film, Moana sets out to return the heart of Te Fiti, teaming up with the demigod Maui. She learns wayfinding and faces the lava demon Te Ka. A key turning point comes when she realizes Te Ka is actually Te Fiti without her heart. Moana restores the heart, healing the goddess and saving her people. She returns home as a legendary wayfinder.

In Moana 2, Moana is chosen by her ancestor Tautai Vasa to finish his quest to save the island of Motufetu from the god Nalo. During this journey, she sacrifices her life, and the gods transform her into a demigoddess. She becomes a chief wayfinder, connecting Motunui with other civilizations.[edit]

Moana has been widely praised as a strong, independent role model. Critics lauded her resourcefulness, courage, and lack of a romantic subplot. IGN called her a wonderful role model. The New York Times described her as inspiring. Among Pacific Islanders, reactions were mixed but largely positive, with many appreciating the cultural representation, though some criticized the blending of different Polynesian cultures.
